Question 1

What details does Luke give about the setting and the people present, and what do those details add to the tension of the scene?

Accepted Answer

Luke stresses that Jesus is teaching and that Pharisees and teachers of the law are “sitting by,” having come from across Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem (v.17). That signals organized attention and evaluation, not a casual crowd. The note that “the power of the Lord was with him to heal” adds expectancy: something significant can happen. The packed house creates a physical obstacle (vv.18–19), while the presence of recognized experts creates a social and religious obstacle once Jesus speaks forgiveness (vv.20–21). The setting builds pressure toward a public test of authority rather than a private healing.

Question 2

How does the friends’ action (vv.18–19) shape what happens next in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

Their action drives the whole encounter. They bring the paralyzed man on a cot, but the crowd blocks the normal route in (vv.18–19). By going up to the roof and lowering him through the tiles into the center, they place the man directly in front of Jesus in a way that cannot be ignored. This creates a public moment: everyone sees the need, the effort, and the interruption. Luke then says Jesus “sees their faith” (v.20), connecting the friends’ determined act to Jesus’ response. The unusual entrance also heightens the stakes of what Jesus says next, because it happens in full view of watchers and crowd.

Question 3

What is surprising about Jesus’ first words to the paralyzed man, and what reaction do they provoke?

Accepted Answer

Instead of immediately addressing paralysis, Jesus first says, “Man, your sins are forgiven you” (v.20). That is surprising because the story has emphasized physical need and access to healing. The reaction is internal but sharp: scribes and Pharisees reason that this is blasphemous speech because only God can forgive sins (v.21). Their objection is not mainly about whether the man needs forgiveness; it is about whether Jesus has the right to declare it. Luke frames the dispute around who can speak this way about God’s forgiveness in a public setting.

Question 4

How does Jesus answer the unspoken objection, and what is the function of his question in vv.23–24?

Accepted Answer

Jesus shows he knows their thoughts (v.22) and challenges their reasoning directly. His question compares two statements: “Your sins are forgiven” and “Arise and walk” (v.23). In context, the point is that one claim is easy to say because it cannot be immediately verified, while the other can be tested publicly. Jesus then states his goal: “that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (v.24). The healing command is not just compassion; it functions as visible evidence in the authority dispute.

Question 5

What does the passage explicitly claim about the relationship between forgiveness and healing in this episode?

Accepted Answer

The passage explicitly links the two by sequence and purpose, without fully explaining the causal relationship. Forgiveness is pronounced first (v.20), and the healing comes second as part of Jesus’ response to the controversy (vv.23–24). Jesus presents the healing as a way for the onlookers to “know” something about his authority to forgive sins (v.24). What the text does not explicitly say is that the paralysis was caused by a specific sin, or that forgiveness mechanically produces healing in every case. Here, healing functions as a public confirmation of Jesus’ claim within the scene.

Question 6

How do the crowd’s reactions in vv.25–26 help interpret what Luke wants the reader to notice?

Accepted Answer

The healed man’s response is immediate and directed toward God: he walks home “glorifying God” (v.25). The crowd’s response mirrors that—amazement, glorifying God, and fear (v.26). Their summary, “We have seen strange things today,” underlines that this was not treated as routine medicine or ordinary teaching. Luke uses these reactions to show that the event affected everyone present, not only the man. The mix of worship and fear suggests a sense of encountering God’s active power and an unsettling challenge to established assumptions about who can speak forgiveness and with what authority.
