A watched teacher and a determined rescue Jesus is teaching while Pharisees and teachers of the law sit nearby, having arrived from across the region. The narrator adds that divine power is present for healing. A group brings a paralyzed man on a cot, but the crowd blocks access. They improvise by going onto the roof and lowering him through the tiles into the center, directly in front of Jesus.
Forgiveness spoken, offense taken Jesus responds to what he “sees” in them—their trust and determination—and addresses the paralyzed man with a personal word: his wrongs are forgiven. The scribes and Pharisees object internally, framing Jesus’ statement as insulting to God because, in their view, only God can forgive.
A challenge about what can be verified Jesus knows their unspoken reasoning and questions it. He poses a comparison: which claim is easier to say—forgiveness or getting the man to walk?
