A fixed direction and a closed door Jesus reaches a turning point: the time is approaching for him to be “taken up,” and he sets his face firmly toward Jerusalem. He sends messengers ahead to arrange things, but a Samaritan village does not welcome him. Luke gives a specific reason: the village reads his journey as Jerusalem-focused and rejects him on that basis.
Disciples want judgment; Jesus rebukes James and John see the refusal and propose calling down fire from the sky, appealing to Elijah as a precedent. Jesus turns and rebukes them, challenging the mindset driving their response. The narrative outcome is practical and immediate: instead of retaliation, they simply move on to another village.
Following without security On the road a man volunteers to follow Jesus wherever he goes. Jesus answers with a picture of homelessness: animals have places to rest, but “the Son of Man” does not. The reply reframes “wherever” as a commitment that may include instability and lack of normal shelter.
Literary Context
This passage functions as a hinge in Luke’s storyline. It follows earlier Galilean ministry and teaching (including disputes and training of the disciples) and marks a new forward drive toward Jerusalem. The narrative shifts from mostly local activity to travel scenes where teachings arise from encounters on the road. Here Luke joins a rejection episode (Samaritan refusal) with a set of short call-and-response sayings about following Jesus, using the travel setting to show both external opposition and the internal cost of discipleship as Jesus’ destination becomes fixed.
Historical Context
Travel between Galilee and Jerusalem could pass through Samaria, where longstanding tensions with Jews made hospitality complicated, especially when a traveler’s destination signaled Jerusalem-centered worship. Villages often provided lodging to travelers, so refusal had practical consequences. Appeals to Elijah reflect shared scriptural memory and expectations about prophetic power and judgment. Family obligations like burial and farewells were serious social duties tied to honor and kinship. Jesus’ responses assume a world where travel is uncertain, household ties are central, and public announcement of a message competes with normal expectations.

A call that outruns a family duty Jesus initiates the next invitation: “Follow me.” The man asks for a delay to bury his father. Jesus responds with a stark contrast: “Leave the dead to bury their own dead,” while the man is to go and announce the kingdom of God. The saying presses urgency and a reordered priority in response to Jesus’ call.
No divided attention once started A third person offers to follow but requests first to say goodbye at home. Jesus answers with a farming image: someone who starts plowing but looks back is not fit for the kingdom of God. The point is about single-minded forward movement—beginning the task with attention fixed ahead rather than split between past attachments and the new path.
Luke presents a turning point: Jesus deliberately commits himself to the road that leads to Jerusalem (v.51). This is not a casual travel note; it frames what follows. Because his direction is Jerusalem, a Samaritan village refuses hospitality (vv.52–53). The disciples’ instinct is to answer rejection with prophetic-style violence, but Jesus rebukes them and the group simply continues elsewhere (vv.54–56).
The second half gives three short scenes about would-be followers (vv.57–62). Jesus’ replies stress that following him can mean instability (“nowhere to lay his head”), urgent priority over even honored family duties, and a forward-looking focus that does not keep turning back.
1) What “taken up” means (v.51). Many read it as pointing mainly to Jesus’ ascension, since “taken up” naturally fits that idea. Others think Luke is using one phrase to summarize the whole coming climax in Jerusalem—suffering, death, resurrection, and then ascension—so the travel decision is set against the entire end-of-ministry arc.
2) How much Jesus says in the rebuke (vv.55–56). Some Bibles include the longer wording (“You don’t know what kind of spirit you are of… the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy… but to save”), while others have only a shorter rebuke. The shared point remains: Jesus rejects retaliatory violence in response to being refused, and the narrative moves on.
3) “Leave the dead to bury their own dead” (v.60). Some take it as a sharp figure of speech: let spiritually “dead” people handle ordinary social obligations while the disciple announces God’s kingdom. Others read it as a way of saying, “Do not delay,” without building a detailed category of “spiritually dead” into the line.
4) “Bury my father” as immediate or delayed (v.59). Some think the father has just died, making Jesus’ answer especially striking. Others think it can mean waiting until the father eventually dies (a potentially long delay), which would fit Jesus’ emphasis on urgency and undivided commitment.
The passage uses short, memorable sayings and compressed storytelling. Several phrases (“taken up,” “dead,” “fit for the kingdom”) can be read more narrowly or more broadly. Also, the wording in vv.55–56 differs across manuscripts, which affects how explicitly the rebuke is explained, even though the basic narrative outcome is stable.
This text helps define the “journey to Jerusalem” as a deliberate, purposeful movement in Luke’s story, not a random itinerary. It places rejection (from outsiders) and correction (of insiders) right at the start of that journey. It also portrays discipleship as costly and single-minded: it may lack normal security, it can reorder even serious family obligations, and it resists backward-looking hesitation.
