Question 1

In vv.51–53, what does Luke emphasize about Jesus’ direction and how does that shape the Samaritan response?

Accepted Answer

Luke highlights Jesus’ resolve with strong language: the days are approaching for him to be “taken up,” and he “sets his face” toward Jerusalem (v.51). That fixed direction is not just geographic; it signals what kind of mission this is. The messengers go ahead to arrange hospitality, but the village refuses (vv.52–53). Luke gives a specific reason: they did not receive him “because” his journey was aimed at Jerusalem. The refusal is tied to what Jerusalem represents, not merely to travel inconvenience.

Question 2

What does the disciples’ appeal to Elijah (v.54) contribute to the scene, and what does Jesus’ response show?

Accepted Answer

By invoking Elijah, James and John present their proposed violence as biblical-prophetic judgment (“command fire… just as Elijah did,” v.54). That frames the Samaritan refusal as something deserving destruction. Jesus’ response is a rebuke that rejects their instinct to punish rejection (vv.55–56). Even in the shorter form of the text, the rebuke is clear because of the immediate outcome: instead of calling down fire, “they went to another village.” Luke places Jesus’ refusal of retaliatory violence at the start of the journey section.

Question 3

How do vv.57–58 redefine what “wherever you go” means for the volunteer follower?

Accepted Answer

The man offers total availability: “I want to follow you wherever you go” (v.57). Jesus answers by focusing on living conditions: animals have resting places, but “the Son of Man has no place to lay his head” (v.58). The reply reframes “wherever” as a life that may lack stability, predictable shelter, and ordinary securities. It does not deny the call; it clarifies the cost embedded in the offer. Luke’s travel setting reinforces the point: the road itself is part of what following entails here.

Question 4

In vv.59–60, what contrast does Jesus draw between burial duties and announcing the kingdom of God?

Accepted Answer

Jesus initiates the call (“Follow me,” v.59), but the man asks to delay for a serious family obligation: burying his father. Jesus responds with a stark contrast: “Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce the kingdom of God” (v.60). Whatever the precise nuance of “dead,” the structure is clear: one path stays within ordinary social expectations; the other is immediate participation in proclaiming God’s reign. Luke presents the kingdom announcement as time-sensitive and priority-setting in relation to normal duties.

Question 5

How does the third encounter (vv.61–62) build on the earlier two, and what does the plow image communicate?

Accepted Answer

The third person also offers to follow but requests a preliminary step: saying goodbye at home (v.61). Jesus responds with a farming image: once a hand is on the plow, looking back makes one “fit” for the kingdom in question (v.62). The image highlights forward attention and uninterrupted direction; looking back suggests divided focus or reconsideration mid-course. Compared with the earlier scenes (lack of security; urgent priority over delay), this saying intensifies the theme of single-minded commitment—no split allegiance or backward pull once the path is chosen.

Question 6

Across vv.51–62, how does Luke connect external rejection with internal discipleship formation?

Accepted Answer

Luke places a rejection by outsiders (a Samaritan village refusing hospitality) right next to Jesus correcting insiders (his disciples’ desire to destroy the rejecters). Then he follows with three snapshots of would-be disciples whose willingness is tested by cost, timing, and focus (vv.57–62). The sequence suggests that the journey toward Jerusalem will involve both opposition and a reshaping of what followers expect: they do not answer rejection with violence, and they do not treat following as compatible with delay, guaranteed comfort, or ongoing backward glances. The road narrative becomes a training ground.
