The passage presents the withered fig tree as a confirmed outcome of Jesus’ earlier word (vv. 20–21). Peter notices that the tree is “withered from the roots,” highlighting a complete result, not a short-term change.

Jesus uses that moment to teach about prayer. The explicit focus is not on the tree itself but on trust directed toward God (“Have faith in God,” v. 22). He describes prayer in unusually bold terms: speaking to “this mountain” without inner doubting and believing that what is said “happens” (v. 23), and praying with the posture of believing one “receives” (v. 24).

3) The timing implied by “believe that you receive them” (v. 24). Some understand it as confidence at the time of praying (treating the request as granted in God’s decision). Others read it as a way of describing confident expectation without specifying “already received,” since the point is faith rather than a technique for timing.

4) Whether v. 26 is part of the earliest text. Many editions note that v. 26 may be absent from some early copies. Even if set aside, v. 25 still clearly links forgiving others with seeking God’s forgiveness.
