In this unit, the Sadducees’ question is framed as a test, built on a Scripture-based story, and answered by Jesus in two moves: first he reframes what “life after rising” entails, then he cites Moses to address the claim that resurrection is impossible. The Sadducees were a leading priestly and aristocratic group in Judea in the late Second Temple period, closely tied to Temple leadership. Mark describes them as denying resurrection, which sets up why their question targets that belief. Their example uses a known family-duty practice: when a married man dies childless, a close male relative is expected to marry the widow to produce offspring in the dead man’s line. Debates between Jewish groups about the afterlife were active in this period, so the story functions as a public challenge. The setting also assumes shared respect for “Moses” as an authoritative source text.
