Question 1

What do we learn about the disciple’s perspective from the words “what kind of stones” and “what kind of buildings”?

Accepted Answer

The disciple’s comment focuses on the temple’s visible features—its massive stones and impressive structures. Addressing Jesus as “Teacher” suggests the disciple expects agreement or shared admiration. The wording implies wonder and perhaps a sense that the temple’s size and beauty represent stability or importance. Mark’s setup matters: the disciple points to what can be seen and measured, while Jesus redirects attention to what will happen to what is seen. The contrast prepares the reader for a surprising reversal: the most impressive public building in their world is not portrayed as untouchable.

Question 2

How does Jesus’ reply both acknowledge and challenge the disciple’s admiration?

Accepted Answer

Jesus echoes the disciple’s focus by saying, “Do you see these great buildings?” He does not argue that the temple is unimpressive. But he immediately challenges the implied conclusion that greatness equals permanence. His prediction—no stone left on another—turns admiration into a warning. The structure’s greatness becomes the backdrop for the scale of the coming loss. In the text, the challenge is not mainly about architecture; it is about expectation. Something that looks enduring will be “thrown down,” and the disciple’s sense of security is unsettled.

Question 3

What is the force of the statement “There will not be left here one stone on another”?

Accepted Answer

In the passage, the phrase functions as an emphatic way of describing complete dismantling. Jesus is not predicting minor damage, repairs, or partial collapse; he describes total ruin (“which will not be thrown down”). The wording is absolute, stressing thoroughness. Readers debate whether it must be taken as a literal, stone-by-stone outcome or as strong language for devastation, but the text’s main effect is clear: the temple’s visible greatness will not protect it from being brought to an end. The prediction is meant to sound final and comprehensive.

Question 4

Why does Mark mention the Mount of Olives and that Jesus sat “opposite the temple”?

Accepted Answer

The location change creates a deliberate vantage point: Jesus is now looking at the temple from across the valley. This shift marks a transition from the public temple area to a more private setting. It also reinforces the topic: the temple remains in view while the conversation turns to what will happen to it. Mark’s detail that Jesus “sat” suggests a settled moment for teaching rather than a passing remark. The geographic note helps readers see that what follows in the chapter is connected back to the temple prediction, not detached from it.

Question 5

What is significant about the questioners being Peter, James, John, and Andrew, and that they ask “privately”?

Accepted Answer

Mark singles out four disciples by name and emphasizes that the question is asked “privately.” In the narrative, this suggests both closeness and caution. The temple is a central public symbol, and speaking about its destruction could be socially and politically risky; the private setting fits that reality. Naming the four also signals that what follows is not casual crowd teaching but an inner-circle inquiry. The text does not explain why these four specifically are mentioned, but it does show that the coming discourse is framed as Jesus’ direct response to their focused questions.

Question 6

How many parts are in the disciples’ question, and what does each part request?

Accepted Answer

The disciples ask in two parts. First: “When will these things be?”—a request for timing. Second: “What is the sign that these things are all about to be accomplished?”—a request for an identifying signal that the predicted events are nearing and will reach completion. The second part is not just curiosity; it asks how they would recognize the approach of what Jesus predicted. Together, the questions show they expect the prediction to unfold in observable history and that they want clarity on both schedule and indicators.

Question 7

Within 13:1–4 alone, what does “these things” most directly refer to, and what uncertainty remains?

Accepted Answer

Most directly, “these things” points back to Jesus’ prediction about the temple: the dismantling of the “great buildings” so that no stone remains on another. That is the immediate subject introduced and it is the clearest referent within these four verses. The uncertainty is whether the disciples are also mentally linking the temple’s fall with broader end-time events, since they ask about a “sign” and about everything being “accomplished.” Mark does not resolve that question here; it is part of what the rest of the chapter must clarify.
