Question 1

What problem do the disciples bring to Jesus in verse 12, and what does that show about their role in this moment?

Accepted Answer

They ask where Jesus wants them to go to prepare so that he can eat the Passover. The question is practical: they assume the meal will happen, but they need a location and the needed setup. In the passage, the disciples function as agents who carry out Jesus’ plan rather than decision-makers. They initiate the logistical question, but Jesus provides the plan and they execute it. Mark’s focus stays on preparation and coordination, setting up the meal that will follow.

Question 2

List the steps Jesus gives in verses 13–15. How detailed are they, and what might that suggest within the story?

Accepted Answer

Jesus sends two disciples into the city; they will meet a man carrying a water jar; they must follow him; when he enters a house they must speak to the house’s master using a set message (“The Teacher says…”) and ask for the guest room; the master will show them a large upstairs room already furnished and ready; then they are to make preparations there. The instructions are strikingly specific. Within Mark’s story, that detail supports the idea that Jesus is directing events calmly and deliberately as the final night begins.

Question 3

What is the function of the man carrying the water jar in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

In the story he functions as a recognizable sign that guides the two disciples to the right house. Because the city would be crowded at festival time, a clear identifier matters. The detail also adds a sense of precision: they are not told to search randomly, but to expect a specific encounter. Mark does not explain whether this was arranged ahead of time or simply foreknown by Jesus; what the text clearly shows is that following this sign leads them to the correct place.

Question 4

Why does Jesus have the disciples address the householder with the words “The Teacher says…” (v. 14)?

Accepted Answer

The set wording frames the request as coming from Jesus with recognized authority (“The Teacher”). It also provides a clear, consistent message for the disciples to deliver, suggesting an established way of identifying who is making the request and what is being asked. The content of the message matters: it asks for the “guest room” where Jesus will eat the Passover with his disciples, showing that the goal is a shared meal space suitable for the whole group. Mark keeps the focus on communication and coordination.

Question 5

What does “a large upper room furnished and ready” (v. 15) tell us, and what does it not tell us?

Accepted Answer

It tells us the space is appropriate for a group meal (large), private (upper room), and already set up in some way (furnished and ready). That means the disciples’ remaining work is to finish the Passover preparations there. It does not tell us exactly what furniture or items were already in place, nor does it explain how the room became available. Some readers infer prior arrangement or hospitality; others simply see readiness as a narrative detail showing the plan will work. The text itself emphasizes readiness, not the backstory.

Question 6

How does verse 16 function as a conclusion to this unit, and what theme does it reinforce?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 reports that the disciples went into the city, found things exactly as Jesus said, and prepared the Passover. It closes the loop: question (where?), instructions, and confirmation. This reinforces a theme Mark uses elsewhere: Jesus’ words prove reliable in unfolding events. In context, that reliability matters because the surrounding chapters carry rising tension and threat. The passage does not yet interpret the meal’s meaning; it establishes that the setting and timing of the meal are under Jesus’ direction.

Question 7

What does this passage indicate about the relationship between divine direction and ordinary action in Mark’s presentation?

Accepted Answer

The passage combines an unusual level of guidance (a predicted meeting, a specific message, a prepared room) with ordinary human steps (walking into the city, following directions, speaking to the homeowner, and doing the remaining preparation). Mark does not separate the extraordinary from the practical; they work together. Whatever one concludes about how Jesus knows the details, the text clearly portrays the disciples as carrying out concrete tasks that make the meal possible, while Jesus’ instruction provides the decisive framework for those tasks.
