Verse by Verse
Arrival, separation, and shared distress They reach Gethsemane, and Jesus tells the larger group to sit while he prays. He then takes Peter, James, and John with him, and Mark emphasizes Jesus’ mounting alarm and distress. Jesus names what is happening inside him: deep sorrow that feels deadly, and he asks them to stay and keep watch.
Jesus’ prayer about the “hour” and the “cup” Jesus goes a short distance, falls to the ground, and prays that the coming “hour” might pass if possible. He addresses God as “Abba, Father,” affirms God’s ability, asks for the “cup” to be removed, and then places his desire under God’s desire: not what Jesus wants, but what God wants.
First and second returns—sleep, warning, and repeat prayer Jesus returns and finds them asleep, addressing Peter by both “Peter” and “Simon,” and asks why he could not watch even one hour. Literary Context
This scene follows the Passover meal and Jesus’ prediction that all will fall away and that Peter will deny him (14:17–31). It begins the movement from table fellowship to arrest and trial, turning the focus from teaching to pressure-filled action. Mark places side by side Jesus’ urgent prayer and the disciples’ repeated failure, preparing for the coming desertion and denial (14:43–72). The language of “hour,” “cup,” and “betrayal” ties Jesus’ inner struggle to the immediate approach of his arrest and the unfolding events that follow.
Historical Context
Gethsemane is presented as a known place on the Mount of Olives area, used here for nighttime prayer during a festival season when Jerusalem was crowded. Jesus addresses God with “Abba,” an intimate family word used alongside “Father,” reflecting a personal, relational form of prayer. “Watch” fits the practical danger of night arrest and the social reality that groups could be targeted by authorities. Talk of “betrayal” and being handed over assumes a context where collaboration with local leadership and Roman power could quickly move someone from suspicion to custody.
Theological Significance
Mark presents Gethsemane as the moment when Jesus faces the immediate approach of arrest (“the hour”) and responds with urgent prayer. The text is explicit that Jesus experiences intense inner distress and names it as overwhelming sorrow (vv. 33–34). He asks his closest followers to stay alert while he prays, but they fall asleep repeatedly (vv. 34, 37, 40).

Third return—final words and approach of the betrayer On the third return, Jesus says, “Sleep on now, and take your rest,” then immediately declares, “It is enough; the hour has come.” He announces that the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners, and calls them to get up and go. The scene ends with urgency: the betrayer is near, so the moment for prayerful waiting is over and confrontation is imminent.
Jesus’ prayer holds two statements together: God is able to do anything, and Jesus asks for the “cup” to be removed; yet he yields his desire to the Father’s desire (v. 36). The passage also makes an explicit connection between sleep and spiritual danger: “Watch and pray” is meant to keep them from “entering into temptation” (v. 38). Finally, Jesus interprets events in advance: the “Son of Man” is being betrayed into the hands of “sinners,” and the betrayer is near (vv. 41–42).
What “the cup” refers to. Many readings take “cup” as shorthand for the suffering and death immediately ahead, including what it means for Jesus to be “handed over” into hostile hands (vv. 41–42). Others emphasize the broader idea of facing God’s appointed ordeal and its spiritual weight, not only the physical pain of execution.
What “enter into temptation” means here. Some understand it mainly as the disciples being tested by fear, confusion, and the coming chaos of arrest—leading to desertion and denial (which the surrounding story soon narrates). Others extend it to a wider spiritual danger: becoming compromised, unfaithful, or swept into the same hostile momentum that leads to betrayal.
How to take “Sleep on now.” It can be heard as permission (“go ahead and sleep”), but many read it as sharp irony or resignation: it is too late for the watch they were supposed to keep, because “the hour has come” immediately follows (v. 41).
Mark uses compressed images (“hour,” “cup,” “temptation”) without fully explaining them inside this paragraph. The immediate story clearly points to arrest and betrayal, but the language also echoes wider biblical ways of speaking about appointed suffering. Likewise, “Sleep on now” sits next to a sudden reversal (“It is enough; the hour has come”), which leaves tone and intent slightly under-specified.
This scene shows Jesus’ full humanity in distress and his settled resolve to align his will with the Father’s will, even when he asks for another way (v. 36). It also presents a stark contrast: Jesus watches and prays; the disciples repeatedly cannot stay awake. Mark frames their failure as more than tiredness—“spirit willing, flesh weak”—and links it to the danger of failing under pressure (v. 38). The passage also advances Mark’s passion narrative by naming, before it happens, that betrayal and being “handed over” are now at the doorstep (vv. 41–42).
