Question 1

What does Mark emphasize about Jesus’ emotional state when he brings Peter, James, and John closer (vv. 33–34)?

Accepted Answer

Mark stresses intensity and openness. Jesus is not calm or detached; he becomes “greatly alarmed and distressed” and then speaks plainly about it. He describes his sorrow as so heavy it feels deadly (“even to death”). The narrative also highlights that Jesus shares this with the three closest disciples rather than keeping it private. His request—“stay here, and watch”—implies that their presence and alertness matter to him in this moment. The text presents Jesus’ anguish as real, not staged, and it sets the contrast with their inability to remain awake.

Question 2

How does Jesus’ prayer in v. 36 hold together God’s power, Jesus’ request, and Jesus’ submission?

Accepted Answer

The prayer has three clear parts. First, Jesus addresses God with intimacy (“Abba, Father”) and affirms God’s ability (“all things are possible to you”). Second, he makes a direct request: “remove this cup from me,” which indicates he does not seek suffering for its own sake. Third, he yields his will to God’s will: “not what I want, but what you want.” Mark presents these together rather than as contradictions. The text shows a real desire for the “hour” to pass, yet a settled decision to accept the Father’s purpose if that is what must happen.

Question 3

In vv. 37–38, what is Jesus’ specific concern for the disciples when he finds them asleep?

Accepted Answer

Jesus’ concern is not only that they failed to stay awake; it is that their lack of watchfulness leaves them vulnerable. He challenges Peter directly (“Simon… couldn’t you watch one hour?”), then gives the reason: “Watch and pray, that you not enter into temptation.” In context, “temptation” points to the looming crisis of arrest and the pressure that will test loyalty. Jesus diagnoses the gap: their inner readiness (“the spirit… willing”) does not match their bodily weakness (“the flesh… weak”). Mark links practical fatigue with spiritual risk under sudden threat.

Question 4

What is the narrative effect of the repeated cycle: Jesus prays, returns, and finds them asleep (vv. 37–40)?

Accepted Answer

The repetition builds contrast and inevitability. Jesus returns three times to the same failure, highlighting that the disciples cannot sustain vigilance even for a short span. Mark adds details that intensify the scene: their eyes are “very heavy,” and they “didn’t know what to answer,” signaling embarrassment and helplessness. Meanwhile, Jesus’ prayer is described as consistent (“saying the same words”), emphasizing focus and resolve. The cycle prepares for what follows in the story: when the arrest arrives, the disciples’ earlier inability to “watch” foreshadows their later scattering and denial.

Question 5

What are the main options for understanding “the hour” in vv. 35 and 41, and which best fits the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, “the hour” is the decisive moment that is about to break in on Jesus—his arrest leading into trial and death. That fits v. 41 closely: “The hour has come… the Son of Man is betrayed… the betrayer is at hand.” Some readers hear “hour” more broadly as the whole appointed period of suffering, not only the instant of capture. Both can overlap: the “hour” arrives with the betrayer and unfolds through the passion events that follow. Mark’s immediate context strongly anchors it to the arrest now approaching.

Question 6

How should “Sleep on now, and take your rest. It is enough” (v. 41) be understood in relation to what comes next?

Accepted Answer

The line can be read in more than one tone, but its placement is key. Right after “Sleep on now,” Jesus says, “It is enough; the hour has come,” and then announces betrayal and the approach of the betrayer. That quick pivot suggests the moment for watchfulness has passed; events are already in motion. Many therefore hear “Sleep on” as irony or a resigned remark rather than genuine permission for a full rest. Even if it is permission, it is immediately overtaken by necessity. Mark uses the line to mark a transition from waiting and prayer to confrontation and arrest.
