A forced helper and the destination A man named Simon from Cyrene is compelled to carry Jesus’ cross as he passes by on the way in from the countryside. Mark identifies him further as the father of Alexander and Rufus, suggesting these names mattered to the intended audience. Jesus is then brought to Golgotha, which Mark explains as “place of a skull.”
Refused drink, crucifixion, and the posted charge Jesus is offered wine mixed with myrrh, but he does not take it. Jesus is crucified, and the soldiers divide his clothing by casting lots to decide who gets what. Mark gives a time reference (“the third hour”) and reports the written notice above him: “THE KING OF THE JEWS,” presented as the stated accusation.
Executed with criminals, counted among them Two robbers are crucified alongside Jesus, one on each side, placing him between them. The text then says scripture was fulfilled by the statement that he was “numbered with transgressors,” connecting Jesus’ position among criminals to a recognized scriptural line.
Literary Context
This passage sits inside Mark’s extended account of Jesus’ trial and death (Mark 14–15). Just before, Jesus has been sentenced and handed over for crucifixion, while he is already being mocked and beaten (15:1–20). The story now shifts outdoors to the road, the execution site, and the public’s reaction. Mark’s narration moves in short steps: forced assistance, arrival at the place, refusal of a drink, crucifixion details, the written charge, and then a widening circle of ridicule from passersby, religious leaders, and even those crucified beside him.
Historical Context
Crucifixion was a Roman form of public execution meant to shame and deter. It often happened in visible places and could include a posted statement of the charge. Soldiers dividing a condemned person’s clothing reflects an execution squad treating belongings as spoils. Forcing a bystander to carry equipment fits a world where troops could press civilians into service. The mockery in the scene reflects an honor-and-status culture: insults, head-wagging, and challenges to “prove it” publicly aim to strip a person of credibility in front of onlookers.
Theological Significance
Mark 15:21–32 presents Jesus’ crucifixion as a public, controlled event where others direct what happens to him. Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry Jesus’ cross, Jesus is taken to Golgotha, and the soldiers handle the execution with practiced routine—crucifying him and dividing his clothing by lot. A written charge is posted over him: “THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Their taunt centers on self-rescue: “save yourself, and come down from the cross.” The chief priests and scribes mock him among themselves, contrasting “He saved others” with “He can’t save himself,” and they add a test: let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down so they may “see and believe.” Even the ones crucified with him join in reproaching him.
The scene emphasizes shame and ridicule. Passersby insult Jesus and bring up the earlier accusation about the temple. Religious leaders mock him, focusing on the irony that he “saved others” but does not save himself. Jesus is crucified between two robbers, and even they join in the reproach.
Why Simon is named (and why Alexander and Rufus are mentioned). Some read the naming as a clue that Mark’s audience knew this family, making the story feel anchored in remembered people. Others think Mark includes the names mainly for narrative color or for identifying the specific Simon.
What the wine mixed with myrrh was for. Many take it as a pain-dulling drink offered before or during crucifixion, highlighting Jesus’ refusal to numb the suffering. Others think it could also carry an element of contempt or mockery (or at least fits the rough atmosphere), even if it had a practical effect.
How to read “that we may see and believe.” Some read the leaders’ words as purely cynical—an impossible demand meant to humiliate. Others allow that it shows the kind of “proof” they think should settle the question (a public display of power), even if the tone is mocking.
Why the disagreement exists Mark reports the actions and the taunts with very little inner commentary. That forces readers to infer motives (for naming people, offering the drink, and framing the challenge). Also, crucifixion practices could include both practical routines and layers of public shaming, so more than one intention can fit the same action.
What this passage clearly contributes This passage adds concrete detail to Mark’s portrait of Jesus’ death: the forced assistance of Simon, the place-name Golgotha, Jesus’ refusal of the myrrh-wine, the soldiers’ dividing of garments, the official charge naming him “King of the Jews,” and his being crucified between criminals. The ridicule centers on a theme Mark has already set up: Jesus is treated as powerless and false, and yet the accusation on the sign and the “saved others” line unintentionally point toward a deeper irony about what his kingship and saving mission look like in Mark’s story.
Mark 10:45 helps explain why “save yourself” is such a sharp taunt in Mark: Jesus’ mission is presented as giving his life rather than self-rescue.
