Question 1

Why does Mark emphasize the timing: “Preparation day… the day before the Sabbath” (v. 42)?

Accepted Answer

Mark highlights timing to explain why everything happens quickly and with urgency. “Preparation day” signals that Sabbath rest is about to begin at sundown, and normal work—including burial preparations—would stop. That time pressure sets up Joseph’s decisive move to secure the body before the window closes. It also clarifies that the burial is not delayed for days; it happens immediately after the crucifixion, the same evening. In Mark’s flow, this timing becomes the bridge between Jesus’ death and the pause created by the Sabbath before the next events.

Question 2

What details does Mark give about Joseph, and what do those details do for the story (v. 43)?

Accepted Answer

Mark identifies Joseph as being from Arimathea, as a respected member of “the council,” and as someone “looking for the kingdom of God.” These details place him among the socially and politically significant people in Jerusalem, not among Jesus’ usual inner circle. That raises the stakes of his action: asking Pilate for the body is described as “bold,” implying potential risk to reputation or safety. The “kingdom of God” note links Joseph’s hopes to themes already central in Mark, suggesting his request is not merely administrative but connected to deeper expectation.

Question 3

Why does Pilate “marvel” that Jesus is already dead, and what does his verification accomplish (vv. 44–45)?

Accepted Answer

Mark says Pilate is surprised at how quickly Jesus may have died. The passage does not explain the medical reason; it focuses on Pilate’s reaction and procedure. Pilate calls the centurion—the officer in charge of the execution—to confirm whether Jesus has been dead “for a while.” Only after hearing the report does Pilate grant the body to Joseph. In the narrative, this step functions like an official confirmation: Jesus’ death is not assumed by sympathetic followers but checked through Roman authority, and the burial proceeds with legal permission.

Question 4

List the burial actions in v. 46 and explain what they show about the burial.

Accepted Answer

Mark describes a sequence: Joseph buys linen, takes Jesus down, wraps him in the linen, lays him in a rock-cut tomb, and rolls a stone against the entrance. The actions show deliberate care (linen and wrapping), physical handling of the body (taking down and placing), and a specific, locatable burial site (a tomb cut from rock). The stone closure indicates the burial is complete and the entrance is shut. Mark’s detail level emphasizes that this is not a vague claim of burial; it is a concrete set of actions in a defined place.

Question 5

What is the narrative importance of the centurion and the women being included (vv. 44–45, 47)?

Accepted Answer

The centurion provides official confirmation of death from the execution side, while the women provide continuity on the burial side by knowing the location of the tomb. Together they form two different kinds of witnesses: Roman oversight confirming death and close observers identifying where Jesus was laid. Mark names Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses, making the witnesses identifiable rather than anonymous. In the story’s movement, their observation prepares for later scenes in which the tomb is revisited; it helps explain how the burial place could be recognized again after the Sabbath.

Question 6

What does Mark explicitly say—and not say—about the tomb and Joseph’s relationship to it (v. 46)?

Accepted Answer

Mark explicitly says the tomb was “cut out of a rock” and that Joseph laid Jesus there and rolled a stone against the entrance. Mark does not explicitly say the tomb belonged to Joseph, was newly made, or was borrowed. Those details appear in other accounts, but in Mark’s wording the emphasis falls on the kind of tomb and the completed closure, not ownership. That matters because Mark’s primary point is that Jesus was placed in a specific, sealed location with witnesses present, rather than providing a full background on Joseph’s property or family arrangements.

Question 7

In v. 47, what could “saw where he was laid” mean, and what is the minimum Mark is clearly claiming?

Accepted Answer

At minimum, Mark is clearly claiming that the two women observed the location of Jesus’ burial—where the tomb was and that Jesus was laid there. Some readers take the phrase to imply they watched the whole process in detail; others think Mark is simply stressing their awareness of the site. Either way, Mark’s narrative point is that the burial location is not unknown or guessed later. The women’s observation anchors the later return to the tomb in continuity with this scene: they are not starting from rumor but from remembered place.
