Jesus’s command already stands Jesus is speaking directly to the spirit in the man: “Come out.” The verse presents Jesus’s command as an active, ongoing action, setting up the following exchange as part of the process of removing the spirit.
The naming reveals the scale Jesus asks, “What is your name?” The reply is “Legion,” followed by an explanation: “for we are many.” The point is not merely a label but information about number and force, suggesting the man’s oppression involves a crowd of spirits rather than a single one.
The spirits negotiate location The spirits “beg” Jesus repeatedly not to send them out of the country/region. The request highlights that Jesus can relocate or expel them, and that the spirits treat his decision as determinative for where they may go.
Literary Context
This episode sits inside Mark’s larger sequence of power-filled scenes after the crossing of the lake. Immediately before, Jesus stills a violent storm, and then he meets the man in the tombs (Mark 5:1–7). The dialogue in vv. 8–13 explains why the man’s condition is so severe and how Jesus’s command brings a decisive change. The spirits’ begging, Jesus’s brief permission, and the sudden, visible outcome in the pigs create a public, concrete sign that the spirits have left the man and that Jesus’s word directs what happens next.
Historical Context
Mark places the scene on the far side of the Sea of Galilee, in a region that likely had mixed Jewish and non-Jewish population and economic life tied to farming and herding. A “great herd” of pigs suggests local food production and trade where pig-keeping was normal, whether for local consumption or sale. The language of “unclean spirit” reflects a worldview in which harmful spiritual forces could afflict a person and disrupt social life. The mention of a steep bank into the sea fits the geography around the lake’s shores and hills.
Theological Significance
Mark presents Jesus as already in control before the negotiation starts: he is commanding an “unclean spirit” to leave the man (v. 8). The following exchange is not a contest of equal powers. The spirits speak as if Jesus’ decision determines what happens next—where they may or may not go (vv. 10–13).

Permission, transfer, and visible destruction A large herd of pigs is nearby. The demons ask to be sent into the pigs “that we may enter into them.” Jesus grants permission, and the spirits come out of the man and enter the herd. About two thousand pigs then rush down a steep bank into the sea and drown, making the transfer and its consequences visible to any onlookers.
The name “Legion” is explained in the text itself: “for we are many” (v. 9). Whatever else “Legion” may suggest, Mark’s explicit point is the scale of the oppression and why the man’s condition is so severe.
The transfer into pigs functions as a public, concrete sign. The spirits ask permission to enter the herd; Jesus permits it; the spirits enter; the herd rushes into the sea and dies (vv. 11–13). The sequence makes the man’s deliverance visible by tying it to an observable outcome nearby.
Some readers think Jesus asks the spirit’s name (v. 9) mainly to expose the truth about the situation—bringing the hidden reality (“we are many”) into the open for those watching, and for the narrative.
Others think the name-question has a more direct role in the conflict, as a way of exerting authority in an exorcism setting. On this reading, knowing and stating the name is part of the process of removal, even though Jesus’ authority is already clear from v. 8.
Some read “out of the country” (v. 10) as “out of this whole region,” meaning the spirits fear being driven away from their familiar territory. Others take it more generally as being sent away altogether, emphasizing expulsion rather than geography. Both fit the basic sense that the spirits are trying to avoid a worse outcome.
The pigs’ stampede (v. 13) is also read in two main ways. Some understand it as a direct effect of the spirits entering the animals. Others read it as a chain reaction (panic, chaos) that follows the transfer, without claiming a precise mechanism.
Why the disagreement exists Mark gives the events in a tight sequence but does not explain motives and mechanisms in detail. The passage reports what is said (name, requests) and what happens (permission, entry, drowning), leaving interpreters to infer why Jesus asks the name and how exactly the pigs’ rush relates to the spirits’ entry.
What this passage clearly contributes This scene adds a concrete picture of Jesus’ authority over hostile spiritual forces: they cannot stay, they can only go where they are allowed, and their exit produces an observable result. It also intensifies the portrait of the man’s prior suffering by stating that the problem was not one spirit but “many” (v. 9). Finally, it frames the spirits as destructive: when given access to the herd, the episode ends in death in the sea (v. 13), underlining the seriousness of what the man is being freed from.
