Literary Context

Historical Context
Matthew portrays events in a Jewish setting where marriage involved formal steps and public expectations about sexual faithfulness and family honor. A pregnancy before the couple began living together would predictably create suspicion and social risk for both parties, especially the woman, and it could pressure the man to distance himself. Dreams were widely recognized in the ancient world as a possible way for a deity to warn, guide, or reveal information, and Matthew presents this dream as authoritative direction for Joseph’s next action. The mention of David evokes Israel’s royal line as a meaningful social and ancestral reference.
Theological Significance
Matthew presents Joseph as facing a crisis and then receiving authoritative guidance through a dream: an angel tells him not to fear bringing Mary home as his wife, because the pregnancy has a divine origin ("from the Holy Spirit"). The message also assigns Joseph a public, family-shaped role: he must name the child “Jesus.” Naming matters in this opening section because it connects to identity, legal family belonging, and the genealogy that just established Davidic descent.

How the name “Jesus” connects to “save.” The text itself supplies the connection (“for…”), but readers debate how tight it is: whether Matthew expects knowledge of the name’s meaning (linked to “Yahweh saves”) or whether the explanation is mainly narrative—this is what Jesus will do, therefore this is what he is to be called.
