Theological significance
Jesus receives the wealthy man's question by directing him toward God's goodness, the commandments, and finally the allegiance exposed by his possessions. The call to sell, give to the poor, and follow Jesus reveals that eternal life cannot be secured by moral confidence while wealth remains a rival master. The man's sorrow shows the grip of possessions, but the passage does not teach that poverty itself earns salvation. In the following exchange Jesus emphasizes the human impossibility and God's power. Discipleship therefore joins trust, justice toward the poor, and undivided allegiance to Jesus under the grace of God.
