Moses’ allowance versus the original pattern Jesus says Moses “allowed” divorce because of the people’s hard-heartedness. Verses 10–12 then record the disciples’ reaction and Jesus’ clarification, shifting from legal debate to what different people are able to live out. The passage sets marriage permanence beside singleness as a real path for some.
Historical Context
Jesus is speaking in a first-century Jewish setting under Roman rule, where marriage, divorce, and household stability were public and economic realities, not merely private choices. Moses’ divorce wording (often connected with Deuteronomy 24) was a known reference point in contemporary discussions, and teachers debated how broadly it applied. Divorce could leave a woman socially and financially vulnerable, and remarriage was commonly assumed as the next step. Eunuchs were also a recognized social category in the wider Mediterranean world, including those physically incapable of marriage or those altered by authorities.

Eunuchs as an analogy for singleness Jesus lists three kinds of eunuchs: those born that way, those made so by others, and those who make themselves so “for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake.” The final category points to voluntary non-marriage (or renunciation of marriage) for a higher purpose. He ends by repeating the filter: whoever can receive it should receive it.
Jesus also treats divorce and remarriage as morally weighty, describing remarriage after divorce as adultery, while including an exception linked to “sexual immorality” (v. 9). The disciples hear his statement as making marriage unusually demanding (v. 10).
Jesus then clarifies that this “saying” is not equally workable for everyone; some can “receive” it and some cannot (v. 11). He uses eunuchs to illustrate that some people are unmarried due to circumstances and some remain unmarried by choice “for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake” (v. 12).
1) What the exception (“except for sexual immorality”) permits. Some read v. 9 as saying sexual immorality makes divorce—and the remarriage that follows—no longer count as adultery. Others think the exception is narrower: it covers a specific kind of sexual wrongdoing that means the “marriage” was never a valid marriage in the first place, or it addresses a particular situation that doesn’t generalize to all cases.
2) Who “he who marries her when she is put away” refers to. Some take it broadly: any man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery because the first bond still stands. Others think the “her” points to a woman wrongly divorced (without the v. 9 exception), so the adultery charge is tied to an unjust divorce rather than every possible divorce scenario.
3) What “made themselves eunuchs” means. Many understand it as a figure for voluntarily remaining unmarried and sexually abstinent for kingdom-focused reasons. A minority reading in church history has treated it as a literal bodily action, but the flow of vv. 10–12 strongly favors an explanation about singleness rather than self-harm.
The disagreements mainly come from how tightly to connect v. 9’s exception clause to the rest of the adultery statement, and how to map Jesus’ short, scenario-based wording onto the variety of real-life divorce situations. Also, the eunuch analogy can be heard either as literal description, metaphor, or both; the immediate context (a discussion about whether it is “better not to marry”) pushes interpretation toward singleness.
Explicitly, the passage claims: Moses’ divorce allowance was a concession to hard-heartedness; it did not reflect the creation intention (v. 8). Jesus frames divorce-plus-remarriage as adultery in general terms, while adding a sexual-immorality exception (v. 9). He acknowledges that the disciples’ reaction is understandable and then introduces an important category: not everyone has the same capacity to live out the “saying” being discussed (v. 11). Finally, he legitimizes singleness as a real condition (by circumstance or choice) and presents voluntary singleness “for the Kingdom of Heaven’s sake” as an intelligible path for some (v. 12).
