The road is turned into an honor-path A “very great” crowd spreads outer garments on the road, while others cut branches and also lay them down. The road itself becomes the focus: people reshape the path in front of Jesus as a visible sign of welcome and respect.
Two moving crowds shout praise and request Matthew pictures people both in front of Jesus and behind him, and they keep crying out as a group. They call “Hosanna,” address Jesus as “Son of David,” and bless the one who comes “in the name of the Lord,” ending with “Hosanna in the highest.” The repeated shouts present the entry as loud and collective.
The city reacts with a question When Jesus enters Jerusalem, “all the city” is stirred up. The immediate result is a shared question: “Who is this?” The verse highlights that the excitement is not limited to the procession; it spreads to the wider city population.
Literary Context
This scene follows Jesus’ deliberate arrangement to enter Jerusalem riding as he comes down from the Mount of Olives (21:1–7), and it begins the final stretch of Matthew’s story in Jerusalem. The crowd’s actions and chants set a tone of heightened expectation just before conflict intensifies in the city, including Jesus’ actions in the temple area (21:12–17). Matthew frames the entry as a public, city-facing moment: the movement goes from the road toward the city, then the city reacts, then the crowd interprets Jesus’ identity for onlookers.
Historical Context
Jerusalem in this period drew many travelers, especially around major festivals, and large crowds could form quickly on the roads leading into the city. Public acclamations, spreading garments, and laying greenery could function as honor gestures for a respected leader. At the same time, Roman oversight and local leadership in Jerusalem were alert to any mass gathering that looked politically charged. In that environment, a shouted title like “Son of David” and a city-wide commotion would naturally raise questions about who Jesus is and what kind of figure he might be.
Theological Significance
Matthew presents Jesus’ entry as a public procession, not a private arrival. The crowd actively “makes a way” for him by spreading garments and branches on the road. Their loud, repeated cries make the moment city-facing and impossible to ignore.

The shouts combine honor-language and prayer-language. “Hosanna” functions as a cry asking for help and also as praise. Calling Jesus “Son of David” treats him as a figure connected to Israel’s royal hope, and blessing the one who comes “in the name of the Lord” frames the moment in worshipful terms.
The city’s reaction shows a gap between the procession and Jerusalem as a whole. The question “Who is this?” implies that many in the city do not yet have a settled view of Jesus.
The crowd’s answer (“the prophet…from Nazareth of Galilee”) both elevates Jesus and locates him. They identify him with prophetic authority while also stressing his known origin outside Jerusalem.
Some readers take the crowd’s words (“Son of David,” “Hosanna”) as a clear, mainly messianic and kingly claim, even if not everyone grasped its full meaning. Others think the language could be sincere but still mixed with unclear expectations—honoring Jesus intensely without a precise understanding of what kind of leader he is.
Some read “This is the prophet” as a lesser title than “Son of David,” suggesting the crowd may be backpedaling or offering a safer description for the wider city. Others read it as complementary: Jesus is both a royal heir and a prophet, and the crowd answers the city with a category many could recognize.
The passage itself juxtaposes titles: highly charged acclamation in v.9 and a more descriptive identification in v.11. It also reports two audiences (the moving crowd and “all the city”) and two responses (praise and questioning). That structure leaves room for different judgments about how coherent the crowd’s understanding was.
Explicitly, the text shows Jesus entering Jerusalem amid mass public honor, framed in God-focused language (“in the name of the Lord”), and causing city-wide disturbance and inquiry. It contributes to Matthew’s portrait of Jesus as publicly significant and contested: celebrated by many, questioned by others, and identified in ways that both raise expectations (“Son of David”) and underline his surprising background (“Nazareth of Galilee”).
