Question 1

In these verses, what identities does Jesus give his disciples, and what audiences are implied by those identities?

Accepted Answer

Jesus names his disciples “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” Both images assume a relationship between the disciples and people beyond their own group. “Earth/world” implies a wider public, not just an inner circle. The examples that follow reinforce this: salt affects what it touches; a city on a hill is visible to outsiders; a lamp in a house gives light to “all who are in the house.” In v.16 the audience becomes explicit: “before men,” meaning other people who can see and respond.

Question 2

What outcome is described when salt “loses its flavor,” and what does that contribute to the passage’s main point?

Accepted Answer

If salt “has lost its flavor,” Jesus says there is no way to make it salty again, and it ends up “good for nothing” except being thrown out and trampled. The description is intentionally final and vivid. Within the passage’s logic, the point is not a chemistry lesson but the seriousness of becoming ineffective in the role the metaphor assigns. The image adds warning to the identity statement: being “salt” implies a distinctive, beneficial effect, and losing that effect makes the salt worthless for its purpose.

Question 3

How do the illustrations in vv.14–15 clarify what Jesus means by calling the disciples “light of the world”?

Accepted Answer

Jesus explains “light of the world” by using two visibility examples. First, “a city set on a hill can’t be hid,” meaning some things are unavoidably noticeable because of where they are placed. Second, a lamp is not lit to be covered by a basket; it is placed on a stand so its light reaches everyone in the house. Together they clarify that “light” is defined by giving illumination to others and being seen in that role. The metaphors push against concealment as contrary to light’s purpose.

Question 4

According to v.16, what specifically is meant to be seen, and what is the stated result of it being seen?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 connects “let your light shine” to the visibility of “your good works.” The text does not say that personality, status, or rhetoric is what should stand out; it names concrete, observable actions. The stated result is also explicit: people “see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” So the passage links public visibility to a redirected outcome. The attention is meant to terminate in honoring God, not in praise for the disciples as an end in itself.

Question 5

How do vv.13 and vv.14–16 function together as one unit, rather than two unrelated sayings?

Accepted Answer

Both halves follow the same pattern: identity (“you are salt/light”), a purpose implied by the image (salt affects; light illuminates), and a warning or corrective about failing that purpose (salt becomes useless; light is not meant to be hidden). The closing line in v.16 gathers the images into a single conclusion by speaking of “light” in terms of visible “good works.” That makes the “salt” image and the “light” image parallel ways of saying one main point: disciples are meant to have a noticeable, beneficial public presence with God-focused results.

Question 6

What does the passage suggest about motive and visibility, based on the movement from being seen to glorifying the Father?

Accepted Answer

The passage clearly values visibility (“can’t be hid,” “shines,” “before men”), but it also names a purpose for that visibility: that observers glorify “your Father in heaven.” That movement implies that being seen is not an end in itself. The disciples’ public actions are meant to function like light—revealing something beyond themselves. While the text does not analyze inner psychology here, it does define the intended direction of public recognition: from seeing the disciples’ deeds to honoring God as the ultimate reference point.
