The core warning and its consequence Jesus tells his listeners to be careful not to do their charitable giving “before men” with the aim of being seen. If being seen is the aim, then they should not expect “reward” from the Father in heaven; the logic is goal determines outcome.
A negative example and its payoff He applies the warning to “when you do merciful deeds,” assuming the action will occur. He forbids making an announcement (“sound a trumpet”) like “hypocrites” who give in synagogues and streets in order to gain human glory. Jesus concludes that such people already have what they were after, so their reward is complete.
The alternative practice and God’s response Jesus gives a vivid picture of secrecy: give in a way so unselfconscious that the “left hand” does not know what the “right hand” does. The intended result is that the gift remains hidden. In that hiddenness, the Father “sees in secret” and will reward openly—God, not the crowd, becomes the relevant witness.
Literary Context
This unit comes within the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus describes what life looks like for his disciples. Verses 1–4 introduce a repeated pattern that continues in the next sections on prayer and fasting: a warning about public display, an example of the “hypocrites,” and an alternative practice aimed at God rather than an audience. Historical Context
Jesus speaks in a Jewish setting where giving to the poor was a recognized duty and commonly associated with devotion to God. Public spaces like synagogues and streets were normal places for collecting and distributing help, and people’s reputations were shaped in these visible community settings. Honor and social standing mattered, so religious generosity could easily become a way to gain praise. Jesus targets that social dynamic: he assumes generosity will happen, but he challenges the habit of turning generosity into a public signal of status and virtue.
Theological Significance
Jesus assumes his followers will give to meet needs (“when you do merciful deeds”), but he puts the spotlight on motive and audience. The central concern is giving “to be seen” and “to get glory from people.” The passage treats that as a real moral danger, especially in public religious and civic spaces.

1) What “sound a trumpet” means. Some read it as an intentionally vivid saying meant to expose showy giving rather than describe a normal practice. Others think Jesus may be pointing to some concrete way donors drew attention to gifts (even if “trumpet” is still a sharp expression). In both readings, the point remains: some giving was made into a performance.
2) What “left hand/right hand” requires. Many take it as a picture of extreme discretion: don’t stage your giving, don’t keep replaying it for admiration, and don’t build an identity around it. Others think it mainly describes avoiding public recognition, without demanding a kind of complete internal forgetfulness. Either way, the instruction pushes against self-advertising.
3) What “reward … openly” refers to. Some read “openly” as public vindication or recognition by God in visible ways. Others see it more broadly as God’s repayment that may or may not be public, stressing that the timing and form belong to God. The text itself is explicit about God rewarding, and less specific about how.
