Saying “Lord” versus doing the Father’s will Jesus draws a boundary: not everyone who addresses him as “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven. The defense—impressive works done “in your name” Jesus describes “many” speaking up “in that day,” appealing to actions associated with spiritual power and public ministry: prophesying, casting out demons, and doing many mighty works. Each claim is anchored in “by your name,” meaning they present these acts as carried out under Jesus’ authority (not merely personal ability).
Jesus’ verdict—no relationship and active wrongdoing Jesus responds with a direct declaration: “I never knew you,” rejecting their implied closeness or approval. He then commands them to leave: “Depart from me.” His reason is ethical: they are “you who work iniquity,” meaning their pattern of practice is wrongdoing even if their outward résumé looks powerful.
Literary Context
These lines come at the close of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus presses for lived obedience rather than performance or appearance. Just before this, he contrasts true and false guides by their “fruit” (7:15–20), and right after, he contrasts two builders whose outcomes show whether Jesus’ words were acted on (7:24–27). So 7:21–23 functions as a final warning: verbal allegiance and even striking religious activity can still miss what Jesus calls the Father’s will, and the final assessment will expose that gap.
Historical Context
Matthew presents Jesus teaching within first-century Jewish life under Roman rule, where public religious identity mattered and where prophets, exorcists, and wonder-workers were known categories. Calling a respected figure “Lord” could be a strong marker of honor and loyalty, and claiming to act “in someone’s name” signaled acting under that person’s authority. Jesus’ warning targets people who can point to recognized religious deeds and public ministry success, yet are shown to lack the kind of alignment and relationship he demands.
Theological Significance
Matthew 7:21–23 presents a sharp contrast between verbal allegiance to Jesus (“Lord, Lord”) and the kind of life that matches “the will of my Father who is in heaven.” The passage’s explicit claim is that words—even intense, religious words—do not guarantee “entering the kingdom of heaven.”
