Arrival and the threat Jesus reaches the other side in the country of the Gergesenes. Two demon-possessed men meet him as they come out from the tombs. They are described as extremely violent, effectively controlling the road so that people cannot pass safely.
The demons speak and request terms The men cry out, addressing Jesus as “Son of God,” and ask what business he has with them. They fear being tormented “before the time,” implying a set future moment they dread. Seeing a large herd of pigs at a distance, the demons beg that, if expelled, they be allowed to enter the pigs.
