Where interpretation differs

Two main questions get handled differently.

First, the “vineyard plantings” language (v.6): some read it as largely literal—Samaria’s site will be so emptied that it becomes agricultural land again. Others read it as a vivid way of saying “unbuilt, open ground,” without claiming vineyards would actually be planted soon.

Second, what “the hire of a prostitute” refers to (v.7): some take it as concrete income tied to illicit worship practices, so the religious wealth is “dirty money.” Others read it more broadly as metaphor—Samaria’s idolatry is like prostitution, so its religious wealth is described as prostitution earnings.

Why the disagreement exists

The passage uses compressed poetic images. “Vineyard” can be a real land use or a stock picture of cultivated land replacing a city. And “prostitute’s hire” can point to a specific practice or function as a moral comparison for idolatry. The text itself gives the direction (tainted gains tied to unfaithful worship) but not the exact mechanism.

What this passage clearly contributes

1. It frames judgment as morally grounded: disaster is presented as a response to Israel’s and Judah’s rebellion, not as random misfortune (v.5).
2. It treats leadership centers as representative: Samaria and Jerusalem stand for national patterns of sin, suggesting the problem is concentrated and public, not merely private (v.5).
3. It describes judgment as de-creation of a city: stones thrown down, foundations uncovered, a built environment reduced to an exposed site (v.6).
4. It targets false worship materially: images and idols are destroyed, and what was accumulated through corrupt worship is removed and “returns” to dishonorable use in the hands of others (v.7). See the wider critique of corrupt worship and leadership in Micah 3:9–12.
