Paid reassurance and selective hostility Yahweh speaks “concerning the prophets” who cause the people to go astray. Their message depends on whether they are being fed: if they can “bite with their teeth,” they proclaim “Peace.” If someone gives them nothing “into their mouths,” they set themselves against that person, described as “preparing war,” meaning they shift from soothing words to aggressive opposition.
Judgment pictured as nightfall over their guidance Because of this behavior, a consequence is announced: “night” and “darkness” will fall on them so they will have no “vision” and will not be able to “divine.” The imagery of the sun going down communicates an enforced end to their claimed ability to see and speak with authority.

Micah’s ministry belongs to Judah’s late eighth-century setting, when Assyrian dominance reshaped politics, economics, and public fear. Prophets and other religious specialists could influence morale and decisions by declaring peace, danger, or divine backing. In that environment, Micah depicts some prophetic voices as tied to material support and social alliances rather than truthful guidance. The announced “darkness” signals loss of status and authority for those who claimed access to reliable insight.
