Question 1

How does the harvest imagery in verse 1 shape the speaker’s complaint?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 frames the complaint as scarcity and disappointment rather than mere irritation. The speaker compares his experience to arriving after summer fruit and grape gleanings are already taken: there is nothing left that can satisfy hunger (“no cluster to eat”). The longing for “the first-ripe fig” sharpens the point—he is not asking for luxury but for something basic, good, and refreshing. Interpreting the image within the passage, the “fruit” corresponds to faithful, upright people and dependable public life, which the speaker says he cannot find in the land.

Question 2

What does verse 2 claim has happened to “the godly” and “the upright,” and how broad is that claim?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 makes an intentionally sweeping claim: the faithful person has vanished from the land, and there is none upright among people. This is a rhetorical way of saying that trustworthy character has become rare or publicly absent. The verse then explains what fills the vacuum: people “lie in wait for blood” and hunt others, even “his brother,” with a net. The pairing of “none upright” with images of ambush suggests the speaker sees a society where relationships that should protect life have become predatory.

Question 3

What details in verse 3 show that wrongdoing is portrayed as coordinated rather than isolated?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 stacks roles and actions to show alignment across the system. “Their hands” are set on evil “to do it diligently,” presenting eagerness and follow-through. Then three influential figures appear: the prince asks for what he wants, the judge is ready to decide “for a reward,” and the great man voices his own harmful desire. The concluding line (“thus they weave it together”) summarizes this as cooperation—requests, payoffs, and elite desires fit together so that injustice is produced through collaboration, not merely private vice.

Question 4

How does verse 4 intensify the evaluation of society, even regarding the “best” and “most upright”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 intensifies the critique by saying even the best available people are like a brier, and the most upright is worse than a thorn hedge. The point is not that they are neutral-but-imperfect, but that they are dangerous to deal with—like plants that injure anyone who brushes against them. This language also reinforces the earlier claim that goodness is scarce: if the “best” still harms, then ordinary social contact becomes unsafe. The verse sets the stage for the announcement that a destabilizing “day” has arrived.

Question 5

What is the relationship between “watchmen,” “visitation,” and “perplexity” in verse 4?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 links a predicted “day” to “watchmen” and “visitation,” and then describes the result as “perplexity” (confusion/panic). Within prophetic literature, watchmen can be those who warn of coming trouble, and “visitation” can mean a decisive coming to inspect and address wrongdoing. Regardless of the exact referent, the verse presents the day as long anticipated (“your watchmen”) and now present (“is come”). The outcome is social disorientation: the structures and expectations people relied on no longer hold, matching the earlier picture of systemic corruption.

Question 6

What explicit behaviors does the passage name as evidence of corruption and violence?

Accepted Answer

The passage names both interpersonal violence and institutional corruption. Interpersonally, people lie in wait for blood, hunt others, and trap even a “brother” with a net (v.2), suggesting betrayal and planned harm. Institutionally, officials treat authority as a tool for gain: the ruler makes demands, the judge is available for a bribe (“for a reward”), and the powerful person’s harmful desire drives decisions (v.3). The combined picture is not only that individuals sin, but that public decision-making and private relationships are bent toward harm.

Question 7

How do verses 1–3 prepare for the announcement of a coming “day” in verse 4?

Accepted Answer

Verses 1–3 build a sense that society has reached a tipping point: goodness feels absent (v.1), the faithful are said to be gone (v.2), and corruption is organized from top to bottom (v.3). That groundwork makes the “day” in verse 4 sound like a consequence that matches the scale of the breakdown. The text does not describe the mechanics of the day, but it presents it as the arrival of what had been warned about, bringing perplexity. In other words, the moral collapse described earlier is portrayed as leading into a public crisis rather than continuing indefinitely.
