Who the “escaped” / “left from the captivity” are. Some understand this as returnees now back in Judah; others include those who avoided deportation or remained in the land through the earlier disruptions. The wording can be read more than one way without changing the main point: Nehemiah is asking about survivors connected to the exile’s aftermath.
Whether being in the palace implies an official job. The text states Nehemiah is in the royal complex; it does not yet say what he does there. Later context may fill that in, but these verses alone mainly establish proximity to imperial power.
