Nehemiah asks God to “remember” a word to Moses Nehemiah urges God to call to mind the “word” that God commanded Moses. He quotes its first half: if the people act unfaithfully, God will scatter them among other peoples. The request is not that God forgot, but that God would act in line with what was spoken.
The promise includes a way back—return and obedience Nehemiah quotes the second half: if the people “return” to God and actually keep and do the commands, then distance will not prevent restoration. Even if the displaced are at the farthest imaginable place (“the uttermost part of the heavens”), God can gather them and bring them to the specific place God has chosen, the place associated with God’s “name” dwelling there.

Literary Context
These verses sit inside Nehemiah’s opening prayer after he hears Jerusalem is in trouble and its defenses are broken (1:1–7). After confessing the community’s failure, Nehemiah shifts to a direct appeal: he asks God to “remember” what was spoken to Moses, and he repeats the promise in a conditional pattern—misconduct brings scattering; return and obedience bring gathering (1:8–9). Verse 10 grounds the appeal in identity and history: the ones Nehemiah is praying for are already God’s people, already marked by a past deliverance, so he asks for present help in line with that relationship.
Historical Context
Nehemiah speaks as a Judean living under the Persian Empire in the mid-fifth century BC, long after earlier deportations and returns. Many Judeans remained scattered across provinces, while a smaller community lived in and around Jerusalem with limited security and status. Persian policy often allowed local peoples to maintain worship and rebuild communities when it served imperial stability, but local opposition and imperial suspicion could still block projects. Nehemiah’s prayer reflects this setting: a dispersed population, a vulnerable Jerusalem, and a leader seeking authorization and protection to strengthen the city and the community.

Some readers take “remember” mainly as a request for God to act now in line with the promise; others hear it more as a prayerful citation of the promise without implying any delay or reluctance on God’s part. The difference is mostly about emphasis, since both readings agree Nehemiah is appealing to God’s stated commitment.
Some readers understand “return” as primarily a moral and relational turning (renewed loyalty shown by obedience), while others think it also includes a concrete return to the land and Jerusalem. The passage itself includes both elements: it explicitly mentions turning and obeying, and it also explicitly speaks of being gathered and brought to a place.
The key phrases are brief and can carry more than one shade of meaning. “Remember” is common prayer language that can mean “act in line with what you said,” but it can also function as a formal appeal to a known promise. Likewise, “return” can describe a renewed relationship, but in a context of exile and resettlement it can naturally be heard with physical return included.
This prayer frames restoration as covenant-consistent: scattering is not random, and gathering is not impossible. Nehemiah treats God’s promise through Moses as reliable and relevant to his current moment. The passage also ties restoration to a specific, chosen place associated with God’s “name,” and it grounds hope in God’s past redemption of this same people.
