Valley Gate and a long wall stretch Hanun and the people of Zanoah are credited with restoring the Valley Gate. The description emphasizes completion: they build it and install its working parts—doors, bolts, and bars. Their assignment also includes “one thousand cubits” of wall extending from that gate in the direction of the Dung Gate, marking an unusually long, clearly bounded segment.
Dung Gate Malchijah son of Rechab, identified as ruler of the district of Beth-haccherem, repairs the Dung Gate. As with the Valley Gate, the text highlights both structure and security hardware: he builds it and sets up doors, bolts, and bars. The verse keeps the focus on a single gate unit and its readiness for use.
Spring Gate and adjacent landmarks Shallun son of Colhozeh, ruler of the district of Mizpah, repairs the Spring Gate. Besides installing the standard gate components, he also “covered it,” suggesting an added protective or structural element beyond the usual phrasing. His work continues along the wall by the pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, reaching as far as the stairs descending from the City of David, using well-known locations to define the repaired stretch.

This passage sits inside Nehemiah 3’s step-by-step register of wall repairs, where each unit names a person or group, identifies a specific gate or wall segment, and briefly describes the work. The chapter’s logic is geographic and cumulative: one repaired section leads to the next, creating a continuous circuit around the city. Verses 13–15 focus on the southern portion of that circuit and highlight gates connected to movement in and out of the city and access to water. The repeated notes about doors, bolts, and bars stress functional readiness, not just masonry.
Historical Context
Nehemiah describes rebuilding Jerusalem’s defenses during the Persian period, when Judah functioned as a small province within a larger imperial system. The south-side gates highlighted here connect to everyday city life—movement in and out, waste removal, and access near major water and garden landmarks.
A repeated emphasis is completeness. The narrative does not only say the wall was “repaired,” but that gates were rebuilt and fitted with working components. That signals that the project aimed at functioning city infrastructure, not symbolic repairs.
Two phrases raise most of the interpretive questions.
First, “one thousand cubits” (v. 13) may be understood as a precise measurement or as a rounded way to say “a very long stretch.” Either way, the text is clearly stressing that Hanun and the people of Zanoah handled an unusually large, clearly bounded portion of wall leading toward the Dung Gate.
Second, Shallun “covered it” (v. 15). Some understand this as adding a roof or protective covering to the gate structure (for example, over a gatehouse). Others take it more generally as completing a protective structural element (such as capping or enclosing part of the construction). The verse itself does not explain the engineering detail, but it does mark extra work beyond what is said for the other gates.
The passage gives brief construction language without technical explanation, and later readers are trying to map short phrases onto specific ancient structures. Also, the chapter uses “built” and “repaired” in a repetitive, summary style, so it can be hard to tell when it means brand-new construction versus major reinforcement of what already existed.
Explicitly, it shows cooperative rebuilding that includes both city residents and surrounding communities (Zanoah, Beth-haccherem, Mizpah’s district). It also shows that the restoration focused on operational security—gates with doors, bolts, and bars—at key access points: the Valley Gate, the Dung Gate, and the Spring Gate. By naming landmarks (pool of Shelah, the king’s garden, stairs from the City of David), the text ties the repair work to Jerusalem’s lived geography and older royal-era reference points, even under Persian-period administration.
