Question 1

In vv. 22–25, what specific gifts and outcomes are credited to God, and how do they build on each other?

Accepted Answer

The prayer stacks God’s gifts in a sequence: God “gave” kingdoms and allotted peoples (v. 22), multiplied their children (v. 23), and brought them into the promised land. Then God subdued the Canaanite inhabitants and their kings (v. 24), resulting in possession of fortified cities and productive land (v. 25). The list becomes increasingly concrete: not only territory, but stocked houses, carved cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees. The outcome is described as eating, being satisfied, becoming “fat,” and enjoying God’s “great goodness” (v. 25).

Question 2

What language in v. 26 shows the rebellion is intentional rather than accidental?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 uses strong, deliberate images: they were “disobedient” and “rebelled,” and they “cast” God’s law behind their back. That picture suggests contempt and refusal, not ignorance. The verse also describes active opposition to correction: they killed prophets who “testified against them” in order to turn them back. Finally, the phrase “awful blasphemies” portrays their actions as a serious affront against God, not merely poor judgment. Overall, the wording presents rebellion as chosen resistance to known instruction and known warnings.

Question 3

How do vv. 27–28 describe the relationship between distress, crying out, and divine rescue?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents a repeated pattern. First, God “delivered them into the hand” of adversaries who distressed them (v. 27). Then “in the time of their trouble” they cried to God, and God heard “from heaven.” God’s response is grounded in “manifold mercies,” expressed by giving “saviors” who rescued them from their enemies (v. 27). Verse 28 repeats and intensifies the cycle: after rest, they do evil again; God leaves them in enemy control; when they return and cry out again, God hears and delivers “many times” according to mercy.

Question 4

What role do prophets play in vv. 26, 29–30, and how does the prayer describe the people’s response?

Accepted Answer

Prophets function as God’s warning system and means of calling the people back. In v. 26 they “testified against them to turn them again,” and some prophets are killed, showing extreme rejection of correction. In v. 29 God again “testified against them” to bring them back to the law, but the people respond with pride: they do not listen, they sin against the ordinances, and they use stubborn body-language metaphors (“withdrew the shoulder,” “hardened their neck”). In v. 30 the prophetic witness continues “many years,” even described as coming “by your Spirit through your prophets,” yet they refuse to hear.

Question 5

What contrasts does the passage draw between God’s actions and the people’s actions across vv. 22–31?

Accepted Answer

God is repeatedly portrayed as giving, hearing, warning, and showing mercy. He gives land and abundance (vv. 22–25), hears cries (vv. 27–28), and continues warning for “many years” (v. 30). The people are portrayed as receiving and enjoying, then rejecting and repeating evil. They “delighted” in God’s goodness (v. 25) but then rebel (v. 26), return to evil after periods of rest (v. 28), and refuse to listen despite repeated testimony (vv. 29–30). The ending contrast is sharp: despite ongoing refusal, God does not make “a full end” or forsake them (v. 31).

Question 6

What does v. 31 add to the logic of the whole cycle, and how does it summarize God’s character?

Accepted Answer

Verse 31 prevents the cycle from ending in total destruction. After describing “many years” of patience and the serious consequence of being handed over to “the peoples of the lands” (v. 30), the prayer says “nevertheless” God did not make a “full end” of them and did not forsake them. The stated reason is God’s character: “gracious and merciful.” In the logic of the confession, discipline is real and repeated, but it is bounded by mercy. The verse frames Israel’s survival not as deserved, but as an outcome of God’s compassion.
