Question 1

What factual exception does verses 47–49 make to the census described earlier in Numbers 1?

Accepted Answer

Verses 47–49 state that the Levites were not counted “among” the other tribes in the census. The text frames this as a deliberate exception based on Yahweh’s instruction to Moses, not a later editorial note. The reason is not explained in terms of population size or status, but by a new assignment: Levi is excluded from “taking the sum” that has just been completed. So, at the level of the story, the census totals are intentionally incomplete with respect to one tribe.

Question 2

According to verse 50, what specific responsibilities are assigned to the Levites, and what do those responsibilities imply about their daily location?

Accepted Answer

Verse 50 assigns the Levites responsibility for the “tent of the testimony,” its furnishings, and everything that belongs to it. Their tasks include carrying the tent and its items, serving in connection with it (“minister to it”), and camping around it. These responsibilities imply the Levites’ daily location is near the sanctuary rather than grouped out on the perimeter with the other tribes. Their camping arrangement is part of their job, not merely a residential detail.

Question 3

How do verses 51–53 describe the Levites’ role during movement and during rest, and what repeated pattern is emphasized?

Accepted Answer

Verses 51–53 describe a clear movement/rest pattern: when the camp moves, Levites take the tent down; when the camp stops and the tent is pitched, Levites set it up. The same group is responsible at both ends of travel—dismantling and reassembly—so the sanctuary’s handling is controlled and consistent. Alongside this, the Levites continue to camp around it, reinforcing that their task is not just transport but ongoing guarding and supervision.

Question 4

What boundary rule is stated in verse 51, and what is the stated consequence of violating it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 51 states that “the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.” The boundary rule is simple: approaching the tent in an unauthorized way is forbidden. The passage does not define “stranger” here, but it clearly contrasts Levites—who handle and camp around the tent—with others, who must not come near. The consequence is stated as death, highlighting that access to the sanctuary is treated as a high-risk boundary, not a casual space open to everyone.

Question 5

What does verse 52 add about the rest of Israel, and how does it complement the Levites’ positioning?

Accepted Answer

Verse 52 says the Israelites pitch their tents “every man by his own camp” and “by his own standard,” organized by their hosts. This complements the Levites’ positioning by describing a larger ordered camp structure: Israel is arranged in tribal groupings with identifiable banners, while the Levites form a distinct group centered on the sanctuary. The text therefore presents a two-level arrangement: tribes in ordered divisions, with a protected center surrounded by authorized personnel.

Question 6

In verse 53, what purpose is given for the Levites camping around the tent, and what phrase summarizes their duty?

Accepted Answer

Verse 53 gives a purpose statement: the Levites camp around the tent “that there be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel.” Their presence is presented as preventing a dangerous outcome for the wider community. The verse then summarizes their duty by saying they “keep the charge of the tent of the testimony,” meaning they bear ongoing responsibility to guard, supervise, and maintain proper boundaries. The focus is communal protection through ordered access.

Question 7

What does verse 54 contribute to the unit’s meaning, given that it is a brief summary?

Accepted Answer

Verse 54 closes the unit by stating that the Israelites did what Yahweh commanded Moses. This brief line signals that the instructions are not merely theoretical; they are accepted as the operating arrangement of the camp. It also reinforces the passage’s authority structure: Yahweh speaks, Moses receives and transmits, and Israel carries it out. As a narrative conclusion, it ties the census and the new Levite assignment together as part of an implemented, organized system.
