1. What it means that Yahweh “departed.” Some take it as physical movement away from the location (the visible presence withdraws). Others take it mainly as the end of the special appearance and the end of direct speech, without needing to picture “movement” in a spatial way. Either way, the narrative point is the same: the encounter concludes, and judgment is revealed.

2. What “leprous” describes. Many readers understand it as a broad category of serious skin disease rather than modern Hansen’s disease. The text itself does not medically specify; it emphasizes visible whiteness and the social-religious weight that such a condition carried in Israel’s system.

Why the disagreement exists

The Hebrew for “departed” can be read as either leaving or withdrawing from an appearance, and the story uses the cloud as the visible sign of the encounter. Also, the Bible’s “leprosy” language covers a range of conditions in ancient Israel, so translating it with a modern disease name can mislead.

What this passage clearly contributes

These verses tie leadership conflict and divine correction to concrete consequences. Explicitly, Yahweh is angry with Miriam and Aaron, the cloud lifts, and Miriam’s condition becomes immediately evident and undeniable. The text does not explain why Miriam alone is afflicted, but it does show that the outcome is not private: it is seen at the Tent, noticed by Aaron, and stated twice for certainty.
