12:9Meaning
Anger and departure Yahweh’s anger is said to flare up “against them,” meaning against Miriam and Aaron. The text then states that he “departed,” signaling the end of the direct encounter and implying a withdrawal of his immediate, visible presence.
Unit 2 (v. 10a): The cloud lifts from the Tent
The cloud moves away from over the Tent. Because the cloud has framed Yahweh’s speaking presence in the scene (cf. Numbers 12:5), its removal marks a transition from speech to outcome.
Unit 3 (v. 10b): Miriam’s condition is revealed
As soon as the cloud lifts, the narrator draws attention—“behold”—to Miriam: she is now afflicted with a severe skin condition, described as white like snow. Aaron looks at her, and the narrator repeats the diagnosis, emphasizing the unmistakable change and its seriousness.
