Together they “took” others and then “rose up before Moses” with 250 community leaders—people described as recognized representatives, regularly summoned to assemblies, and well known.

Why the disagreement exists The passage blends leadership conflict (“against Moses and against Aaron,” v.3) with worship access language (“holy,” “bring near,” censers/incense, vv.5–7). Because those themes overlap, interpreters differ on how much of the dispute is political authority versus sacred approach to the LORD, and on how to weigh the challengers’ claim about the whole community’s holiness against Moses’ claim that the LORD will identify whom he accepts.
What this passage clearly contributes This scene frames holiness as something the LORD publicly clarifies rather than something claimed as a slogan.
