Threat and appeal for restraint Yahweh tells Moses and Aaron to move away from the congregation so it can be consumed quickly. Instead of stepping back, they fall facedown and appeal to God as the one who knows every human spirit. The narrative assumes Israel is living as a large traveling camp community in the wilderness period, organized around clans and tents and led by recognized leaders and elders.
