The passage presents Yahweh as the active controller of what Balaam can perceive and say. The text explicitly credits Yahweh with enabling the donkey to speak (v. 28) and enabling Balaam to see the angel (v. 31). Balaam’s anger and threat to kill the donkey (v. 29) is set against the donkey’s calm appeal to their long history (v. 30), highlighting Balaam’s misreading of events.

The angel’s drawn sword signals real danger, not a mild warning. The angel explicitly says Balaam’s path is “perverse” (misaligned and unacceptable) and that the donkey’s evasions saved Balaam from death (vv. 32–33). Balaam’s response—falling facedown, confessing sin, offering to turn back—confirms he now recognizes he has been in the wrong (vv. 31, 34).

Where interpretation differs

Did the donkey literally speak, or is this a story device? The narrative states Yahweh “opened the mouth” of the donkey and presents a back-and-forth conversation (vv. 28–30). Many readers take that straightforwardly as a miraculous event. Others think the author uses an extraordinary scene to make a point about spiritual blindness and divine control, without requiring readers to treat the animal speech as a normal report of how animals communicate.

What exactly is “perverse” about Balaam’s way? The angel does not define the “perversity” in detail (v. 32). Some interpret it as Balaam’s internal motive (going for gain, intending to find a way around God’s prior limits). Others read it more simply as the act of proceeding on a path Yahweh opposed at that moment, whether or not Balaam fully understood why.

Why the disagreement exists

The text combines very concrete details (walls, sword, three beatings, falling facedown) with a highly unusual event (a donkey speaking) and a morally weighty evaluation (“perverse”) that is not unpacked. That leaves room for different judgments about genre-like expectations (how “literal” to read the animal speech) and about how much inner motive can be inferred beyond what the angel explicitly states.

What this passage clearly contributes

1. Yahweh can override normal perception and communication: he enables speech and sight in order to stop a dangerous course (vv. 28, 31).
2. Balaam, the professional “seer,” is ironically out-seen by his donkey until Yahweh opens his eyes; the story stresses the limits of human insight (vv. 30–31).
3. Divine opposition is not merely informational but protective and lethal in its seriousness: the drawn sword and the stated outcome (“I would have slain you”) make the warning concrete (vv. 31–33).
4. Even when Balaam is allowed to continue, he is constrained: he may go, but only to speak what Yahweh gives him (v. 35). This sets up the later speeches as compelled rather than hired performance.
