Once such a vow exists, the husband can do one of two things: he can make it stand (confirm it) or he can make it void (cancel it).
Silence over time counts as confirmation If the husband “altogether” remains silent toward her “from day to day,” the text treats that continuing non-response as establishing all the vows and bonds resting on her. The passage assumes that a wife could make vows, but also assumes her husband had a recognized role in confirming or canceling them once he learned of them. The wording is brief and does not spell out procedure. “Day” language can be read as a technical time window or as a common way of describing repeated days. Likewise, “bear iniquity” can describe guilt, responsibility to make things right, or exposure to consequences; the verse does not unpack which aspects are foremost.
This unit clarifies three explicit claims: (1) the husband may confirm or cancel his wife’s vows, including self-denying pledges (v. 13); (2) ongoing silence after hearing counts as confirmation and thereby establishes the vows (v. 14); (3) if he later cancels after that point, he—not she—bears the “iniquity” tied to that late annulment (v. 15).
