Question 1

What two events determine Israel’s two actions in vv. 17–18?

Accepted Answer

Verses 17–18 set a simple pair of triggers. First, when the cloud is “taken up from over the Tent,” Israel journeys afterward. Second, “in the place where the cloud abode,” Israel encamps there. The passage restates this as “at the commandment of Yahweh” they journey and “at the commandment of Yahweh” they encamp. It also adds a duration rule: as long as the cloud remains on the tent, they remain camped. The cloud’s movement (or lack of movement) is presented as the public indicator for when travel is allowed or forbidden.

Question 2

How does the passage use repetition, and what does that repetition emphasize?

Accepted Answer

The paragraph repeats the same core statements in multiple forms: journeying follows the cloud lifting; camping continues where the cloud settles; both are “at the commandment of Yahweh.” The repetition is reinforced by listing different lengths of time (many days, a few days, evening-to-morning, two days, a month, a year). This repetition emphasizes stability of the rule rather than novelty: the guiding principle doesn’t change with circumstances. Whether the stop is long or short, the deciding factor is still the cloud’s status over the tent, framed as Yahweh’s command.

Question 3

What do vv. 19–20 add beyond the basic rule in vv. 17–18?

Accepted Answer

Verses 19–20 explore two different scenarios—long stays and short stays—and show that both are treated as obedience. If the cloud stays “many days,” Israel “kept the charge of Yahweh” and did not travel. If the cloud stays only “a few days,” they still remain encamped according to Yahweh’s command, and then journey according to Yahweh’s command when the time comes. The point is that the community’s faithfulness is measured by the same standard in both cases: not moving prematurely and not refusing to move when the signal changes.

Question 4

How do vv. 21–22 handle uncertainty about timing, and what pattern remains constant?

Accepted Answer

Verses 21–22 address unpredictable timing with concrete examples: the cloud might lift in the morning after a single night, or it might remain through day and night and lift later. It might remain two days, a month, or a year. These examples normalize uncertainty and prevent readers from assuming a “typical” length of stay. Yet the pattern remains constant: while the cloud remains on the tent, they do not travel; when it is taken up, they travel. The passage ties every timeframe—short or long—to one consistent decision rule.

Question 5

What does the phrase “kept the charge of Yahweh” contribute to the meaning of the passage (vv. 19, 23)?

Accepted Answer

“Kept the charge of Yahweh” links camping with active responsibility, not mere inactivity. In v. 19 it appears in the context of not traveling during a long stay, implying that remaining in place is part of covenant order, not a lack of direction. In v. 23 it returns in the concluding summary, showing that their obedience includes both traveling when told and staying when told, under Yahweh’s authority. The passage doesn’t specify the contents of the “charge,” but it clearly frames “waiting” as an expression of keeping what Yahweh has assigned.

Question 6

What role does Moses play in v. 23, and how does that relate to the cloud’s role in vv. 17–22?

Accepted Answer

In vv. 17–22 the cloud functions as the shared, visible indicator for the whole camp: lifting leads to journeying; remaining leads to encamping. Verse 23 restates the same “commandment of Yahweh” pattern but adds that they kept Yahweh’s charge “at the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.” This suggests Moses has a mediating role in how Yahweh’s command is carried out—organizing, communicating, or authorizing the community’s response—without removing the cloud’s central function as the publicly observable signal over the tent.

Question 7

What does the passage explicitly say about who controls Israel’s travel schedule, and what does it not explain?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the passage says Israel journeys and encamps “at the commandment of Yahweh,” and it repeatedly ties that command to the cloud’s lifting or staying over the tent. It also says they kept Yahweh’s charge by that same command, including “by Moses” in the final line. What it does not explain is the full mechanism: whether the cloud alone constituted the complete instruction, whether Moses received additional spoken direction, or how leaders recognized the exact moment the cloud was considered “taken up.” The text focuses on the rule and the obedience rather than the logistics of communication.
