Question 1

What kinds of “gain” are contrasted in verse 16, and what does the pairing suggest the proverb values?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 sets “honor” against “riches” by pairing them with different kinds of people: a gracious woman “obtains honor,” while violent men “obtain riches.” The text does not deny that violence can produce wealth; it states that it can. But the arrangement implies an evaluation: honor attached to grace is presented as the more fitting or admirable outcome than wealth produced by force. The proverb’s contrast works by placing social reputation and moral beauty (honor) over raw acquisition (riches).

Question 2

In verse 17, how does the proverb describe the effects of mercy and cruelty, and why does it focus on the doer’s own “soul” and “flesh”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 describes mercy and cruelty as actions with inward consequences. The merciful person “does good to his own soul,” while the cruel person “troubles his own flesh.” The focus is not first on the victim, even though victims exist; it highlights how a person’s character and choices rebound on the self. “Soul” and “flesh” likely point to the whole person—inner life and embodied life—suggesting mercy is self-benefiting in a deep way, while cruelty corrodes the person’s own well-being.

Question 3

What does verse 18 mean by “deceitful wages,” and how does the farming image clarify the contrast?

Accepted Answer

“Deceitful wages” portrays wicked gain as misleading: it looks like profit but does not deliver what it promises. The deception may include dishonest methods, but the proverb’s main claim is about reliability and moral quality—this kind of pay cannot be trusted to stand. The second line clarifies with a planting-and-harvest image: “sowing righteousness” leads to a “sure reward.” The point is not that righteous people control outcomes like a machine, but that righteousness is the kind of seed that fits a dependable harvest in God’s moral order.

Question 4

How do verses 19–20 connect human moral direction with God’s evaluation?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 presents moral direction as movement toward an endpoint: true righteousness leads to “life,” while pursuing evil leads to “death.” Verse 20 then anchors this in God’s perspective: Yahweh rejects “perverse” hearts and delights in “blameless” ways. Together they connect pathway and verdict. The path isn’t merely social strategy; it aligns or conflicts with what God finds detestable or delightful. The text’s explicit claim is that inner character (“heart”) matters to God, not only outward success, and that this moral alignment shapes the direction of a life.

Question 5

What kind of certainty does verse 21 claim, and what is meant by “the seed of the righteous”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 claims long-range certainty: the evil person will not ultimately go unpunished, while the “seed of the righteous” will be delivered. The proverb is not a timetable; it states a final outcome rather than immediate results. “Seed” can mean literal descendants—children who benefit from the stability and protection associated with a righteous line—or it can mean an ongoing legacy that comes from the righteous person. In either case, the saying extends consequences beyond one individual moment and argues that evil does not get the last word.

Question 6

How does the image in verse 22 function as a conclusion to the unit’s themes?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 uses a jarring mismatch: a gold ring (valuable, beautiful) placed in a pig’s snout (unclean and degrading in Israel’s world) becomes absurd. The proverb applies this to “a beautiful woman who lacks discretion,” meaning beauty without good judgment is misplaced and ends up dishonoring what could have been admirable. As a conclusion, it ties back to the unit’s repeated contrast between external markers (riches, beauty) and inner character (grace, mercy, righteousness, discretion). The image says appearance alone cannot carry value when wisdom is missing.

Question 7

Across verses 16–22, what repeated pattern is used to persuade, and what does that reveal about the passage’s purpose?

Accepted Answer

The passage persuades through stacked contrasts: grace versus violence (v.16), mercy versus cruelty (v.17), righteous sowing versus wicked wages (v.18), righteousness versus pursuing evil (v.19), perverse hearts versus blameless ways (v.20), and finally beauty versus discretion (v.22). This repeated “A, but B” pattern trains the reader to evaluate life by moral categories rather than surface results. The purpose is not to narrate a story but to build a moral imagination: certain kinds of character tend toward honor, life, and God’s delight, while their opposites tend toward trouble, death, and rejection.
