Courts and local power could be abused by “schemes,” and violence could be carried out through plots and false testimony as well as direct attack. The text also assumes that Yahweh evaluates human conduct and can grant favor or bring condemnation, framing everyday moral choices as accountable within Israel’s public and religious life.

The contrast with “lying in wait for blood” supports either: deceptive speech harms; upright speech protects life.
Why the disagreement exists These sayings are compact and image-rich. They do not spell out one setting (home, court, marketplace), so readers infer the situation. Also, metaphors like “root” and “house” naturally invite more than one level of meaning.
