Question 1

In vv. 17–18, what kinds of speech are contrasted, and what effects do they have?

Accepted Answer

Verses 17–18 set two pairs side by side. First, there is truthful testimony that reports what is real versus a false witness who speaks lies (v. 17). Second, there is reckless or rash speech compared to the tongue of the wise (v. 18). The passage describes consequences in relational terms: rash words can wound as if with a sword, while wise words can bring healing. The focus is not only on whether speech is accurate, but also on how speech functions in community life—either injuring people or helping them recover.

Question 2

How does v. 19 develop the theme of truth and lies beyond immediate situations?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 shifts from the moment of speaking to what lasts over time. “Truth’s lips” are pictured as established or standing firm, while the “lying tongue” is described as brief or momentary. The proverb is making a durability claim: truth has staying power, whereas lies have a short shelf life. Even if a lie seems effective at first, it cannot remain stable. This develops the earlier contrasts by suggesting that time exposes the difference between reality-aligned speech and reality-distorting speech.

Question 3

What connection does v. 20 make between inner motives and outer outcomes?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 explicitly moves inward: “Deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil.” That ties deceptive speech to a deeper posture of scheming harm, not mere misunderstanding. The contrasting line links peace-promoting intent with an emotional outcome: “joy comes to the promoters of peace.” The verse therefore connects planning and inner orientation (“in the heart”) to experienced results. It also implies that speech and action flow from what is being cultivated internally—either deceitful plotting or peace-seeking counsel.

Question 4

In v. 21, what is being claimed about the righteous and the wicked, and how might Proverbs’ style shape how we read it?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 contrasts two outcomes: “No mischief shall happen to the righteous,” while “the wicked shall be filled with evil.” The wording is broad and categorical, which is typical of proverbs: they often present life patterns in sharp contrasts rather than listing qualifications. Read as a pattern, the verse says righteousness tends to avoid being overtaken by ruinous trouble, while wickedness tends to generate and accumulate evil. Read as an absolute, it sounds like a guarantee of trouble-free life for the righteous. The genre’s compressed style is a key factor in the discussion.

Question 5

How does v. 22 summarize the unit’s main moral evaluation, and what does “do the truth” suggest?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 gives the strongest evaluation in the passage: lying speech is described as detestable to Yahweh, while those who “do the truth” are his delight. This ties the whole cluster (testimony, ordinary speech, inner plotting, outcomes) to God’s perspective, not only human consequences. The phrase “do the truth” suggests truth is practiced, not merely stated—truthfulness as an embodied integrity. At minimum it includes honest speech, but in context it naturally reaches into the heart-level orientation and the kind of plans and counsel a person produces.

Question 6

Across vv. 17–22, how does the passage connect speech, character, community impact, and God’s evaluation?

Accepted Answer

The movement of the unit is layered. It begins with speech in public situations (truthful testimony versus false witness), then expands to everyday speech that harms or heals (vv. 17–18). It then adds a time dimension (truth lasts; lies fade, v. 19). Next it locates the source of deceit and peace in the “heart” and links them to emotional outcomes (v. 20). Finally it summarizes typical life outcomes for righteous and wicked (v. 21) and ends with explicit divine approval/disapproval (v. 22). Speech is portrayed as an expression of inner character with real social effects under God’s scrutiny.
