Question 1

In verse 24, what contrast is created by “upward” and “downward,” and what outcome is being avoided?

Accepted Answer

Verse 24 paints wisdom as a “path of life” that goes “upward,” not in a geographic sense but in direction and outcome. The opposite direction is “downward to Sheol,” a common way to speak about death and the realm of the dead. The contrast sets wisdom against a drift toward death, loss, or ruin. The verse’s main claim is preventative: the wise person’s way moves away from that downward end. The imagery assumes that choices have momentum and that wisdom changes where a life is headed.

Question 2

How do verses 25–26 portray Yahweh’s involvement with both social structures and inner life?

Accepted Answer

Verses 25–26 attribute two kinds of action to Yahweh. Socially, he “uproots the house of the proud” but “keeps the widow’s borders intact.” That frames God as resisting arrogant security while guarding a vulnerable person’s property line. Internally, he “detests the thoughts of the wicked” yet finds the “thoughts of the pure” pleasing. Together, the sayings connect outward stability (house, land boundaries) with inward realities (plans and motives), presenting God as evaluating and acting in both arenas.

Question 3

What is the relationship in verses 26–27 between thoughts, gain, bribes, and life?

Accepted Answer

Verse 26 focuses on what people think and plan: wicked thoughts are rejected by Yahweh, while pure thoughts are pleasing. Verse 27 then moves from inner intent to money practices. Greedy pursuit of gain brings trouble on one’s own “house,” suggesting that unjust acquisition destabilizes family life and legacy. The contrast is “hating bribes,” which is linked with “living.” Read together, the passage presents corruption as starting in the mind and showing up in financial behavior, with life-and-death weight attached to those choices.

Question 4

What contrasts are drawn in verse 28 between the righteous and the wicked regarding speech?

Accepted Answer

Verse 28 contrasts two sources and two speech patterns. For the righteous, the “heart” (the inner self) “weighs answers,” implying restraint, reflection, and care before speaking. For the wicked, the “mouth” “gushes out evil,” implying speed, excess, and harmful content. The proverb is less about eloquence and more about moral formation: speech reveals the kind of person speaking. The contrast also prepares for verse 29 by linking character with how one relates to God.

Question 5

How does verse 29 connect moral categories (“righteous” and “wicked”) with Yahweh’s response?

Accepted Answer

Verse 29 states a two-part contrast: Yahweh is “far from the wicked,” but he “hears the prayer of the righteous.” The verse connects moral posture to relational access. The righteous are portrayed as people whose prayers are received; the wicked are portrayed as alienated or rejected. Even if “far” is relational rather than spatial, the point is that God does not treat all people’s prayers and ways as equally acceptable. The proverb ties prayer to righteousness as part of a coherent life under God’s attention.

Question 6

Across verses 25–29, what repeated outcomes are linked to pride, greed, and bribery versus humility, purity, and righteousness?

Accepted Answer

Pride is linked with loss of stability: Yahweh “uproots the house of the proud.” Greedy gain brings “trouble” to one’s own house, and bribery is treated as the opposite of a path that leads to “life.” On the other side, God preserves the widow’s boundary (protection of the vulnerable), approves pure thoughts, associates rejecting bribes with living, and portrays the righteous as careful in speech and heard in prayer. The repeated outcomes cluster around stability versus ruin, life versus death-direction, and acceptance versus rejection by Yahweh.
