Who “the companion of her youth” is. Many understand it as her husband (or a pledged spouse), making this an adultery scenario. Others take it more broadly as an early-life partner or close companion, still implying a broken foundational commitment.

How absolute “none return” is. Some take v.19 as an unqualified statement: entering that world leads to irreversible ruin. Others read it as a strong wisdom warning in general terms: entanglement commonly results in outcomes so destructive that return to a normal, life-giving path is rare and difficult.

Why the disagreement exists The key terms are vivid and somewhat elastic: “strange/foreigner” can be used for outsiders in different senses, “companion of youth” does not specify legal status, and “death” language in Proverbs can refer to physical death, social collapse, spiritual-moral destruction, or a blend. The poetry’s purpose is to warn forcefully, which can sound absolute even when functioning as a generalization.
