Don’t guarantee another person’s debt The teacher warns, “Don’t be one of those who strike hands,” meaning don’t join the group that seals a pledge for someone else’s debt. The logic is practical: if you cannot pay, the creditor can take even basic necessities—pictured as losing your bed from under you. The point is not that all lending is wrong, but that staking your own minimal security on another person’s obligation is reckless.
Don’t tamper with inherited boundaries The instruction shifts to land: don’t move an “ancient boundary stone” that earlier generations established. The saying assumes those stones represent settled, recognized limits that protect ownership and inheritance. Moving them is presented as a wrongful act against community order and against the legacy left by “your fathers.”
Skill tends to lift a worker’s station The teacher invites observation: when you “see” a person who is skilled in his work, expect a trajectory.
