Question 1

How do verses 13–16 progress from speech to inner attitude, and why might that ordering matter for the unit’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

The unit starts with what the sluggard says (danger outside), then moves to what he does (turning on the bed), then to what he cannot complete (lifting food to his mouth), and ends with what he thinks of himself (wiser than discreet advisers). That ordering suggests the sayings are not just about a single missed task. They trace a downward spiral: words rationalize inaction, habits reinforce non-action, even self-serving effort collapses, and the root is a settled self-confidence that blocks correction.

Question 2

In verse 13, what effect does the repeated claim about a “lion” in both the “road” and the “streets” create?

Accepted Answer

The repetition escalates the excuse. “Road” and “streets” cover the normal places a person would have to go, so the sluggard’s claim paints the whole outside world as unsafe. The doubled picture (“lion” then “fierce lion”) heightens the drama, making the excuse sound urgent and serious. Whether the danger is imagined or merely exaggerated, the point is how a fear-framed statement can function as a totalizing justification for staying put.

Question 3

How does the door-on-hinges comparison in verse 14 communicate “motion without progress”?

Accepted Answer

A door can swing repeatedly, but it never changes location; it returns to the same place. The proverb says the sluggard on his bed is like that door. The image captures activity that looks like movement—turning over, shifting position—without actual forward action. Because the door’s movement is real but unproductive, the comparison mocks a pattern where restlessness or constant repositioning becomes a substitute for decisive effort.

Question 4

What is the force of the extreme picture in verse 15 (hand in dish, but not bringing it to the mouth)?

Accepted Answer

The scene is intentionally overdrawn: the sluggard begins the act (hand reaches the dish) but does not complete it (hand does not return to feed him). The exaggeration makes a point about follow-through. Laziness here is not portrayed merely as slow pace but as a kind of breakdown between starting and finishing, even when the task directly benefits the person. The proverb exposes how inertia can become so entrenched that even simple, necessary actions stall.

Question 5

In verse 16, what does “wiser in his own eyes” add that the earlier images do not?

Accepted Answer

Earlier verses could be read as physical tiredness or situational avoidance. Verse 16 interprets the pattern from the inside: the sluggard’s self-evaluation is inflated and resistant. He is “wiser” to himself than “seven” discreet answerers—meaning multiple sensible voices cannot compete with his internal certainty. This frames laziness as tied to self-deception: the person’s inner story justifies the excuses and sustains the lack of action, making change unlikely because counsel is dismissed in advance.

Question 6

What does the reference to “seven men who answer with discretion” imply about the kind of counsel being rejected?

Accepted Answer

The advisers are not described as harsh, noisy, or foolish; they “answer with discretion,” suggesting measured, sensible replies. “Seven” implies at least a significant number, possibly a full set of competent counselors. The contrast highlights how strong the sluggard’s self-trust is: it is not merely disagreement with one critic, but a settled preference for his own judgment over a broad and reasonable consensus. The proverb targets stubborn self-confidence rather than careful independent thinking.

Question 7

How do the images in verses 13–15 prepare for the conclusion in verse 16?

Accepted Answer

Verses 13–15 show three outward symptoms: alarming excuses, repetitive bed-turning, and incomplete basic action. These could be treated as isolated behaviors. Verse 16 gathers them under a deeper diagnosis: the sluggard’s self-perception is the engine of the pattern. Because he is “wiser in his own eyes,” his excuse sounds like realism, his inactivity feels justified, and his stalled follow-through becomes normal. The closing line explains why the earlier problems persist despite obvious absurdity.
