Question 1

In verse 8, what two kinds of people are contrasted, and what outcome is stated about wealth?

Accepted Answer

Verse 8 contrasts (1) a person who increases wealth through “excessive interest” and (2) a person marked by “pity on the poor.” The explicit outcome is a reversal: the first person “gathers” wealth, but the final beneficiary is not the exploiter. Instead, the proverb says the wealth ends up for the one who is compassionate toward the poor. The saying does not describe the mechanism (legal loss, social reversal, divine judgment, etc.); it simply asserts that exploitative gain is unstable and is redirected toward a more merciful end.

Question 2

How does verse 9 connect listening and prayer, and what is the evaluated result?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 links “hearing the law” (listening to God’s instruction) with the moral quality of prayer. The explicit claim is that turning away the ear from hearing makes “even” one’s prayer an “abomination.” The force of “even” is that prayer, which might look pious, is not treated as a positive act when it is paired with refusal to listen. The proverb does not say prayer causes the refusal, but that persistent refusal changes what prayer becomes: not merely ineffective, but morally offensive in God’s view.

Question 3

In verse 10, what are the two outcomes described, and who receives each?

Accepted Answer

Verse 10 presents two outcomes. First, the person who causes the upright to go astray “in an evil way” will “fall into his own trap.” That is a stated reversal: harm intended for others returns on the instigator. Second, the “blameless” are contrasted with the trap outcome: they “inherit good.” The verse does not define “evil way” in detail, but it does make the moral logic clear: corrupt influence is self-destructive, while integrity is associated with receiving good rather than being ruined by the scheme.

Question 4

What does verse 11 suggest about the relationship between wealth, wisdom, and perception?

Accepted Answer

Verse 11 contrasts self-assessment with true insight. The rich person “is wise in his own eyes,” which suggests wealth can produce confidence and a sense of being right, not necessarily actual wisdom. In contrast, “the poor who has understanding sees through him.” The explicit claim is not that rich people cannot be wise, or that poor people are automatically wise, but that understanding is not owned by wealth. The proverb highlights the possibility of self-deception tied to riches and the surprising clarity that may exist in someone without social power.

Question 5

How does verse 12 describe public life under righteous triumph versus wicked rise?

Accepted Answer

Verse 12 focuses on community-level effects. When the righteous “triumph,” there is “great glory,” meaning public honor, openness, and a visible sense of wellbeing. When the wicked “rise,” “men hide themselves,” describing fear, avoidance, and the instinct to keep out of view. The proverb does not spell out whether the “wicked” are rulers, influential elites, or simply dominant figures, but the social outcome is clear: the moral character of those who succeed shapes whether ordinary people feel safe to be seen and to participate in public life.

Question 6

Across verses 8–12, what repeated pattern of ‘reversal’ or ‘exposure’ appears?

Accepted Answer

Several verses portray reversals or exposures. In v.8, wealth gained through exploitative interest ends up benefiting someone compassionate, not the exploiter. In v.10, the misleader falls into his own trap while the blameless receive good. In v.11, the rich person’s self-image (“wise in his own eyes”) is exposed by the poor person’s understanding. In v.12, the public mood flips depending on who rises: righteous triumph produces visible honor; wicked ascent produces hiding. Together, these sayings depict a moral order where appearance and short-term advantage are not the final word.
