Don’t weaponize speech against the vulnerable The instruction is simple: do not slander a servant to his master. The reason is practical and moral: the servant may “curse you,” and you may end up “held guilty.” The warning assumes that meddling speech can trigger consequences—both social fallout (being cursed) and being judged blameworthy for the harm done.
Family contempt and self-deceived “purity” The first “generation” curses its father and refuses to bless its mother, portraying a breakdown of basic respect and gratitude. The second “generation” claims moral cleanliness—“pure in their own eyes”—but remains “not washed” and still filthy. Together, these show a mix of open contempt and inner self-deception.

These verses sit inside Proverbs 30, a collection linked with “the sayings of Agur” (30:1). The chapter moves between personal requests and sharp observations about human limits and social evil. Verses 10–14 function as a brief unit that starts with a direct warning about a specific kind of harmful speech (v. 10) and then widens into a set of four “generation” portraits (vv. 11–14). Each portrait escalates: from family disrespect, to self-deception, to visible arrogance, to outright predation against the vulnerable.
Historical Context
Proverbs reflects Israel’s wisdom tradition, shaped for teaching in households and wider community life. In that world, servants and masters were normal social realities, and a servant’s livelihood and safety could be heavily affected by what others reported to a master. Honor for father and mother was a basic social expectation, and public behavior like proud “eyes” or abusive speech carried strong moral weight. The imagery of teeth like weapons assumes a setting where the poor and needy could be exploited through intimidation, legal pressure, or economic power.
Theological Significance
These verses connect harmful speech and social cruelty. Verse 10 warns against using accusation as a weapon against someone with less power (a servant) by reporting them to the person who controls their livelihood (the master). The text’s stated outcome is that the speaker’s action can rebound: the servant “curses” them and they end up “held guilty.”

Two main questions have real ambiguity.
First, what does it mean that the servant may “curse you” and you may be “held guilty” (v. 10)? Some read this as mainly social and legal fallout: the servant protests or appeals for justice, and the slanderer becomes blameworthy in the community or in court-like settings. Others read it as broader moral accountability before God: the “curse” functions like a plea that calls down divine judgment, and “guilty” describes being answerable to God for the harm.
Second, what exactly is the “devouring” of the poor (v. 14)? Some take it as vivid metaphor for economic and legal oppression that strips the vulnerable of security and place in society. Others allow that the imagery can include direct violence as well, since the language is intentionally extreme (teeth like weapons).
Why the disagreement exists The wording in v. 10 does not specify the setting where guilt is assigned (public opinion, legal proceedings, or divine judgment), and the verb “curse” can describe either hostile speech or a call for harm. Likewise, v. 14 uses figurative weapon imagery, which can portray more than one kind of predation (economic, legal, physical).
