Small creatures with unusually strong practical wisdom The speaker introduces another set of four. They are “little” in size or strength, yet their behavior is described as “exceeding wise.” Wisdom here is shown as effective survival and fitting action, not as impressive rank.
Planning ahead and choosing secure shelter Ants are described as not strong, yet they secure food in the summer, showing foresight and disciplined work while conditions are favorable. Proverbs reflects an Israelite wisdom setting where people learned character and practical judgment through short sayings, family instruction, and observation of the natural world. The social images assume a household economy with servants, inheritance rights, marriage arrangements, and status boundaries between mistress and maid. The political image assumes kingship as a known institution, along with the dangers of unfit rulers. The animal examples fit a land familiar with ants, rock-dwelling small mammals, seasonal swarms of locusts, and small lizards commonly found in homes and palaces.
Theological Significance
This passage uses vivid list sayings to name situations that feel socially unlivable (vv. 21–23) and to highlight wisdom found in surprisingly small places (vv. 24–28). The “earth trembling” language is best read as strong imagery for a community’s stability being shaken, not a geology report.

Why an “unloved woman” marrying is called disruptive (v. 23). Some read this as a critique of the woman herself (as though she becomes unbearable once married). Others read it as describing a tense social situation: a long-rejected person finally gains status and the household or community reacts with rivalry, resentment, or sharp role conflict. The text states the scenario is socially “unbearable,” but does not spell out who is at fault.
What exactly the proverb is criticizing in the four upheavals (vv. 22–23). Some emphasize “unfitness for the role” (servant as king; fool prospering) as the main point. Others emphasize the relational fallout that often follows sudden reversal (envy, retaliation, score-settling). The text clearly signals instability; it is less explicit about whether incompetence or resentment is primary.
The sayings are compressed and image-driven. They name situations without giving backstory, motives, or outcomes, so interpreters have to infer what makes each case “unbearable.” Also, the images come from ancient household structures (servant/king, mistress/maid) where modern readers may not immediately see the assumed pressures.
The passage explicitly claims that certain social reversals can destabilize a community (vv. 21–23) and that real wisdom can be seen in small, seemingly weak creatures (vv. 24–28). The theological inference it supports (without stating it directly) is that wise order is not identical with high status: wisdom can be present where there is little power, and power can be dangerous when held without wisdom. It also frames observation of creation as a legitimate source for learning practical wisdom within Israel’s wisdom tradition (compare Proverbs 1:7 for the book’s broader grounding).
