Question 1

How do verses 20–21 describe the way wisdom is received and retained?

Accepted Answer

The passage stacks up listening and keeping language to show wisdom as sustained attention, not a quick exposure. The son is called to “attend” and “turn your ear,” then to keep the sayings from leaving his eyes and to store them “in the midst” of the heart. Sight and hearing together picture repeated contact—words kept in view and held internally. The emphasis falls on retention: the teaching remains present enough to shape the person’s inner center, which prepares for the later focus on speech, gaze, and steps.

Question 2

What reasons does verse 22 give for keeping the father’s sayings close?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 grounds the call to keep the sayings in two outcomes: they are “life” to those who “find” them, and “health” to the whole body. The wording suggests the instruction is not merely informative; it is portrayed as life-giving and restorative. “Find” implies more than hearing; it involves receiving and grasping the teaching. Whether the “health” is read mainly as physical benefit or broader well-being, the verse treats wisdom as something that impacts the person as a whole, not just the mind.

Question 3

In verse 23, what does the text claim about the “heart,” and what does it not claim?

Accepted Answer

The explicit claim is that the heart must be guarded with exceptional care because from it comes the “wellspring of life.” The heart is treated as the source from which life’s direction and quality flow. The verse does not define “heart” in a narrow way (only emotions, only thoughts, etc.); it simply treats it as the inner control center. It also does not explain specific methods of guarding. Instead, it supplies the reason: what is protected at the source affects everything downstream.

Question 4

How does verse 24 relate to the heart as a “wellspring,” and what kind of speech is targeted?

Accepted Answer

Verse 24 moves from inner source to outer expression: if the heart is the spring, speech is one of the first streams. The targeted speech is described as a “perverse mouth” and “corrupt lips,” language that suggests twisted, distorted, or integrity-breaking talk—speech that bends truth, manipulates, stirs conflict, or misleads. The verse presents such speech as something to be put away and kept far, implying that corrupt speech is not a harmless habit but a serious indicator of moral direction flowing from within.

Question 5

What is the function of the “eyes” imagery in verse 25, in the flow of the passage?

Accepted Answer

The eyes imagery continues the passage’s movement from internalized words (vv. 20–21) and guarded heart (v. 23) to observable direction. Looking “straight ahead” and fixing the gaze “directly before you” portrays focus and steadiness. In context, it is not about visual technique but about undistracted orientation—refusing to be drawn aside by competing attractions or misleading options. The steady gaze matches the later language about a level path and not turning right or left, reinforcing a single-minded moral direction.

Question 6

How do verses 26–27 develop the “path” theme from earlier in Proverbs 4?

Accepted Answer

Earlier in the chapter, two ways are contrasted: the way of the wicked and the way of the righteous (4:10–19). Verses 26–27 function like a practical wrap-up: instead of describing the two paths, they describe how to stay on the good one. The learner is to make the path level and have ways established—images of stability, removing obstacles, and walking consistently. The closing line (“don’t turn… remove your foot from evil”) ties the path directly to moral choice, not mere planning.

Question 7

How do the four areas—heart, speech, eyes, and steps—work together as a single picture?

Accepted Answer

The passage presents them as connected layers of one life. The sayings are taken in and kept (vv. 20–21), which supports guarding the heart as the inner source (v. 23). From that inner source come outward indicators: speech that can be crooked or clean (v. 24), attention that can drift or stay fixed (v. 25), and a path that can be steady or veering (vv. 26–27). The overall picture is integrated: inner formation and outward conduct belong together, and the text treats inconsistencies among them as a problem of direction at the source.
