Historical Context
Proverbs reflects Israel’s wisdom teaching, where elders trained the young—especially young men—in practical skill for life, often through short sayings, warning stories, and vivid images. In that setting, sexual temptation and the threat of adultery were treated as social and personal hazards, not merely private choices, because they could destroy households, reputations, and community stability. The passage assumes a world where “paths” and “houses” can stand for whole ways of life, and where Sheol is the common grave-realm used as a stark picture of life cut short and ruined.
