Question 1

How does Wisdom describe her closest companions and activities in verses 12–14?

Accepted Answer

In vv. 12–14, Wisdom portrays herself as living “at home” with prudence, suggesting she is not separated from careful judgment but inseparable from it. She also says she “finds out” knowledge and discretion, which frames Wisdom as more than having information—she uncovers what is genuinely helpful for wise choices. The passage then moves from skills to moral stance: the fear of Yahweh is defined as hating evil, and Wisdom personally rejects pride, arrogance, corrupt conduct, and twisted speech. Finally, she claims to possess counsel, sound knowledge, understanding, and power—qualities she can supply to others.

Question 2

What does the passage say the “fear of Yahweh” means, and what specific evils are listed?

Accepted Answer

Verse 13 gives a direct definition: the fear of Yahweh is “to hate evil.” Instead of treating reverence for God as only an emotion or ritual posture, the verse ties it to opposition toward what destroys life and truth. Wisdom then lists concrete forms of evil she hates: pride and arrogance (attitudes that elevate self over what is right), “the evil way” (corrupt patterns of conduct), and “the perverse mouth” (speech that twists, deceives, or harms). In this passage, rejecting evil speech is not a side issue; it is part of what it means to fear Yahweh.

Question 3

In verses 15–16, what kinds of leaders are mentioned, and what is Wisdom’s role in their rule?

Accepted Answer

The text names multiple layers of leadership—kings, princes, nobles, and broadly “all the righteous rulers of the earth.” The repetition emphasizes scope: from the top of the political order to other officials. Wisdom’s stated role is that they rule “by me,” and that they “decree justice” through her. The focus is not simply on holding office or achieving stability, but on making decisions that are just. The passage presents Wisdom as essential for governance that genuinely deserves to be called righteous, whether that means moral guidance, real enablement, or both.

Question 4

What relationship does Wisdom describe with those who love and seek her (v. 17), and what does “find” imply in context?

Accepted Answer

Wisdom describes a reciprocal relationship: “I love those who love me.” She then adds a promise about access: those who seek her diligently will find her. In context, “find” is not mainly about discovering a hidden fact; it is about coming into Wisdom’s benefits and guidance—prudence, sound counsel, understanding, and a life aligned with righteousness and justice (vv. 12–14, 20). The verse also implies that Wisdom is not reserved for an elite class; she can be located and known through earnest pursuit, which fits the chapter’s broader public invitation to listen.

Question 5

How does the passage describe the value of what Wisdom gives (vv. 18–19), and what comparisons are used?

Accepted Answer

Verses 18–19 associate Wisdom with “riches” and “honor,” but stress durability: “enduring wealth and prosperity.” The passage then measures Wisdom’s output using agricultural and economic imagery—her “fruit” and “yield.” These outcomes are said to be better than gold, even “fine gold,” and better than “choice silver.” The comparisons communicate that Wisdom’s results are of higher quality and longer-term worth than the most trusted forms of ancient wealth. The text does not only claim usefulness; it claims superior value relative to what people commonly prize.

Question 6

According to verses 20–21, what path does Wisdom walk, and how is that connected to wealth and “treasuries”?

Accepted Answer

Wisdom says she walks “in the way of righteousness” and in the middle of “paths of justice” (v. 20). This connects Wisdom’s gifts to moral direction: her benefits are tied to a route marked by rightness and fair dealing. Verse 21 then states a purpose: “that I may give wealth to those who love me; I fill their treasuries.” In the flow of the passage, this wealth is framed as the outcome of walking Wisdom’s path, not as a separate, unrelated prize. The text links Wisdom’s moral path with tangible, valued results.
