The earth is pictured as packed full of what belongs to God—his “riches,” meaning the abundant resources and living things that display his creative capacity.
The sea as a vast habitat Attention shifts to “the sea,” described as great and wide. Its main feature is life: it contains living things beyond counting. The wording stresses range and diversity—creatures “small and great,” implying a layered ecosystem rather than a single kind of life.
Human travel and Leviathan at play Two examples make the sea feel active. Ships move across it, showing humans using the sea for travel and work. Alongside them is Leviathan, explicitly said to be formed by God, and depicted “to play” in the sea—an image of freedom and vitality, not conflict, within God’s world.
Literary Context
Psalm 104 is a long hymn of praise that follows the created world from sky and weather down to land, plants, animals, and human rhythms, repeatedly highlighting ongoing provision and order. These verses sit in the psalm’s creation survey after the land-focused scenes (springs, animals, vegetation, sun and moon) and they widen the view to include the whole earth and then the sea. The logic moves from an exclamation (“how many”) to an explanation (“made in wisdom”) to examples (sea creatures, ships, Leviathan). The tone is observational and celebratory rather than argumentative.
Historical Context
The poem reflects an ancient Israelite perspective shaped by daily dependence on seasons, land fertility, and water sources, and by awareness of maritime trade even if many Israelites were not seafarers. Mention of ships suggests familiarity with coastal commerce and travel in the eastern Mediterranean. The sea is portrayed as immense and teeming, fitting a pre-modern world where the ocean was both economically important and unpredictable. Leviathan appears as a well-known figure in Israel’s wider cultural environment, often associated with the sea’s power, yet here it is integrated into the created order as one creature among many.

Human activity appears naturally within creation’s scene: ships move across the sea. Leviathan is also placed within that same ordered world as a creature Yahweh “formed,” and here it is portrayed as moving freely, even “to play,” rather than as a threat.
Two main questions draw different readings.
First, “your riches” may be heard as (a) the earth’s resources and life-forms that belong to Yahweh, or (b) Yahweh’s splendor displayed through creation more generally. Both fit the wording; the verse does not narrowly define the phrase.
Second, Leviathan may be read as (a) a real sea creature described poetically, (b) a symbolic figure for the sea’s untamed power that is still under Yahweh’s creative rule, or (c) both at once (a real referent used with symbolic weight). The text itself stresses Yahweh’s forming of Leviathan and its non-hostile presence in the scene.
Why the disagreement exists The language is poetic and compressed. Phrases like “riches” and “to play” invite more than one plausible nuance, and Leviathan is a well-known image elsewhere that can carry different associations. Readers differ on how much symbolic meaning to press in a poem that is mainly observational and celebratory.
What this passage clearly contributes It contributes a creation-focused claim: the world’s abundance—especially the teeming sea—is evidence of Yahweh’s wise making. It also places humans (ships) and formidable sea life (Leviathan) side by side inside the same created order, implying that the sea is not outside Yahweh’s rule but part of a filled, inhabited world.
