• Some read it mainly as evaluation: God looks into the righteous person’s life and character, assessing what is true.
• Others also hear “testing through events” in the word: God’s examination includes allowing or using hard circumstances that reveal and refine what a person is really like.

A second question is how to take “his soul hates.”

• Some take it as relational language: a strong, personal opposition (God is set against the wicked) without making claims about God having fluctuating emotions.
• Others take it as genuine emotional language as well as relational opposition: the verse portrays God’s deep revulsion toward wickedness and violence-loving people.

Why the disagreement exists

The verse uses compact poetic language. “Examines” can refer either to careful assessment or to proving something by a test. And “his soul hates” uses human-like wording (“soul”) that can be read as describing God’s inner life, or as vivid speech that communicates God’s settled stance.

What this passage clearly contributes

This line contributes a sharp moral contrast: the righteous are not ignored—God pays close attention to them—while the wicked, especially those defined by loving violence (violence), are met with God’s deep opposition. It also portrays evil not only as actions but as allegiance (“love of violence”) that marks a person’s identity and places them under God’s rejection. Within Psalm 11, it undergirds confidence that divine evaluation is real even when human society feels unstable (Psalm 11:5).
