Literary Context
Psalm 11 as a whole presents a situation where danger and social breakdown tempt the speaker to flee, but the speaker insists on trusting Yahweh instead. The psalm shifts from human advice and visible threats to God’s stable position and awareness, emphasizing that God sees and evaluates human conduct. Verse 5 sits inside that larger movement: it supports the claim that the world is not morally unmanaged. The contrast in v. 5 prepares for the following lines that continue describing outcomes for the violent and God’s favor toward the upright (vv. 6–7).
