11:6Meaning
The wicked receive a destructive “storm” The text says Yahweh will “rain” burning coals on the wicked, like a violent downpour from above. It adds “fire, sulfur, and scorching wind,” stacking images of heat and ruin. The line ends by calling this “the portion of their cup,” meaning this is what is assigned to them to receive.
Unit 2 (v. 7a): The reason is Yahweh’s moral character
The outcome is grounded in who Yahweh is: he is righteous, not indifferent. Because he is upright, he “loves righteousness” (he is drawn to what is right, and approves it).
Unit 3 (v. 7b): The upright are promised access and assurance
In contrast to the wicked, “the upright shall see his face.” This points to welcomed presence rather than distance: those who live uprightly will not be shut out. The psalm ends with this calm, relational assurance after the severe picture of judgment.
