Literary Context
Psalm 113 opens with repeated calls to praise and quickly focuses that praise on Yahweh’s “name,” meaning Yahweh as made known and recognized among people. Verses 2–3 function like a headline for the rest of the psalm: praise is not limited by the worshipers’ moment or location. The next verses (vv. 4–9) develop why this praise is fitting, describing Yahweh’s greatness above the nations and his attention to the lowly. So vv. 2–3 set the scope (always/everywhere) before the psalm supplies the reasons (who Yahweh is and what he does).
Historical Context
As a hymn-like psalm used in Israel’s worship life, Psalm 113 reflects a setting where communities regularly gathered and used set phrases to voice honor to their God. The language assumes a world experienced through daily cycles (“sunrise” to “sunset”) and through wide horizons (“east” to “west”). In an era when peoples were often tied to particular lands and deities, this psalm’s wording pushes beyond a merely local claim: Israel’s God is to be honored across time and across the whole span of the world as people know it, wherever the sun’s path is observed.
Theological Significance
Psalm 113:2–3 presents Yahweh as worthy of public honor that is not limited by time or geography. The focus is on Yahweh’s “name” (), meaning Yahweh as known and acknowledged among people, not a magical formula. The lines pair two totalities: unending time (“from this time forth and forevermore”) and wide reach (“from the rising of the sun to its going down”).

Two phrases carry some interpretive flexibility.
First, “Blessed be the name of Yahweh” can be read mainly as (a) spoken praise directed to God (“May Yahweh be honored”) or (b) a declaration that Yahweh’s name is already in a blessed, honored state. In practice, both readings still treat the line as praise-oriented.
Second, “from the rising of the sun to the going down of the same” can mean (a) “all day long” (continuous praise through the day) or (b) “from east to west” (praise across the world as people experience it). Both fit the language, and the pairing with “forevermore” supports a comprehensive scope either way.
