Question 1

What contrasts does the speaker draw between his persecutors and his own inner response in vv.161–163?

Accepted Answer

The speaker says powerful people pursue him “without cause,” which highlights injustice and social vulnerability (v.161). Instead of responding with fear or retaliation, he describes his heart as standing in awe of God’s words. He then shifts to delight: God’s word feels like unexpectedly finding valuable spoil (v.162). The next contrast is moral and verbal: he hates falsehood and loves God’s law (v.163). Together these verses present two opposing forces—unjust human pressure and deceptive speech—met by reverence for God’s word and a commitment to truth shaped by God’s instruction.

Question 2

How do vv.164–165 connect praise, God’s ordinances, and “great peace”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 164 ties frequent praise to God’s “righteous ordinances,” suggesting that God’s decisions and standards are reliable enough to generate repeated worship. Verse 165 then describes a result for those who love God’s law: “great peace,” paired with “nothing causes them to stumble.” The connection is that God’s right rulings are not only ideas to affirm; they create stability. The passage does not explain the mechanics in detail, but it links love for God’s instruction with an inner steadiness that resists being thrown off course, even in a context where the speaker is being targeted by the powerful.

Question 3

What does the speaker mean when he combines hope for salvation with obedience in v.166?

Accepted Answer

In v.166 the speaker says he has “hoped for” God’s salvation (deliverance) and also “done” God’s commandments. The pairing suggests he does not see deliverance as something earned by obedience, because he still describes it as something he waits for from Yahweh. At the same time, hope is not passive; it sits alongside active loyalty. Within this psalm’s repeated pattern, God’s instruction shapes the speaker’s conduct while God’s saving help remains necessary. The verse presents dependence and responsibility as compatible: he obeys, but he still needs Yahweh to rescue.

Question 4

How do vv.169–170 frame the speaker’s requests, and what does “according to your word” add?

Accepted Answer

Verses 169–170 contain two linked pleas: first for understanding, then for deliverance. In both cases the speaker asks that his cry and supplication “come before” Yahweh, emphasizing access to God’s attention. The phrase “according to your word” grounds both requests in God’s revealed instruction and promises rather than in the speaker’s merits or emotions. Understanding is not merely information; it is comprehension shaped by God’s word. Deliverance is not random rescue; it is salvation consistent with what God has said and with God’s right ways. The repeated phrase makes God’s word the measure and basis of what he seeks.

Question 5

What cause-and-effect relationship appears in vv.171–172 between being taught and praising?

Accepted Answer

In vv.171–172 the speaker links learning from God to speaking and singing. He asks that praise would “pour out” from his lips because Yahweh teaches him the statutes (v.171). Then he imagines his tongue singing about God’s word because all God’s commandments are righteousness (v.172). The direction runs from God’s instruction to the speaker’s response: teaching leads to praise, and recognizing the rightness of God’s commands leads to song. This portrays worship as a reasoned outcome of receiving and understanding God’s guidance, not merely an emotional impulse disconnected from content.

Question 6

How do vv.173–175 portray the speaker’s basis for asking help, life, and deliverance?

Accepted Answer

In vv.173–175 the speaker asks for God’s hand to be ready to help, for his soul to live, and for God’s ordinances to help him. He gives reasons that are tied to his allegiance: he has “chosen” God’s precepts (v.173), he longs for God’s salvation and delights in God’s law (v.174). Even the request to live is linked to praise (v.175). The passage presents these as relational and covenant-shaped reasons: he belongs to God’s way, treasures it, and therefore seeks ongoing sustaining help that aligns with God’s ordinances rather than apart from them.

Question 7

How should v.176 (“I have gone astray like a lost sheep”) be read alongside vv.166–168, where the speaker claims obedience?

Accepted Answer

Verses 166–168 contain strong claims of obedience and love for God’s testimonies, grounded in God’s full knowledge of his life. Then v.176 ends with an admission of wandering like a lost sheep and a plea for God to seek him, while still saying he does not forget God’s commandments. Read together, the passage presents obedience as real but not self-sustaining. The “lost sheep” image can express vulnerability and drifting, whether through weakness, confusion, or actual missteps. Either way, the closing line emphasizes ongoing need: even a devoted person requires God’s searching, restoring initiative.
