The text also holds together devotion and dependence. The speaker can say he has kept and loved God’s testimonies (vv.166–168) while still asking for understanding, rescue, and help “according to your word” (vv.169–175). “Seven times a day” (v.164). Some take this as a literal schedule of repeated prayer and praise. Others read it as a poetic way of saying “again and again” or “as fully as possible,” emphasizing completeness rather than a timetable.

“Nothing causes them to stumble” (v.165). Some read this as protection from moral collapse (not being knocked off a faithful path). Others read it more broadly as stability amid troubles (not being ruined or derailed by external pressure). The immediate context includes persecution, so many readers hear at least emotional and spiritual steadiness in view.

“Salvation/deliverance” (vv.166, 174). Some interpret this mainly as rescue from enemies and unjust rulers in the speaker’s present crisis. Others take it as a wider hope for God’s saving help in every sense, without denying a concrete threat.

Obedience and wandering (vv.166–168 vs. v.176). Some think the “lost sheep” line is mainly about weakness and vulnerability (needing God’s guidance), not a confession of serious wrongdoing. Others see it as a real admission that even a sincerely obedient person can drift into disobedience and needs to be brought back.

Why the disagreement exists Psalm 119 is poetry. It uses strong, sweeping lines (“nothing causes them to stumble”) alongside personal confession (“I have gone astray”).
